It’s national occupational therapy month! We are proud to serve the neurodivergent population on Maui while using a neurodiverse affirming approach to promote a positive self identity among our clients!

There is no right or wrong way to engage in authentic play. Neurodivergent children sometimes are discouraged or redirected from play they engage in because it doesn’t look neurotypical or how the “normal” population of children engage in play. we encourage a balance of therapeutic play and child lead authentic play to facilitate development, joy and to facilitate a positive self identity.

we use a neurodiverse-affirming interoception curriculum that is evidence-based and extensively researched by Doctor . Sensory processing differences are unique to each person, so we help our clients explore and notice their body signals. We help them connect their body signals to emotions without judgment or persuasion about how it “should” feel in the body. Everyone is different, and we all perceive through our senses differently. Interoception awareness and practice are key to self-awareness and self- and co-regulation.

The vestibular system is another sensory system to consider when exploring regulation activities. If your child seeks it, you might see them jumping, swaying, swinging, or moving their bodies a lot. Giving them opportunities to engage in vestibular activation activities can help with their sense of well-being!

During our occupational therapy sessions, we gently guide our clients in understanding their neurotype, fostering a positive and empowering self-identity. We cherish highlighting their strengths and thoughtfully exploring their interoceptive awareness. Through gentle self-awareness exercises involving sensory processing and exploration, we aim to cultivate understanding and acceptance of their unique traits. We believe it is vital to teach our clients how to confidently advocate for their needs in a world that often isn’t naturally accommodating. Our goal is to support them with kindness and empathy every step of the way.
