🕊️ National Grief Awareness Day is August 30 — Join Us in Honoring the Journey of Healing 🕊️

Grief touches us all, yet it’s often a journey walked in silence. As National Grief Awareness Day approaches on August 30, we are preparing to honor the importance of open conversations, compassionate support, and the healing power of community.

This heart is a reflection from Pāʻia School’s Grief Support Group which was a partnership with Hospice Maui. Together, we create safe, nurturing spaces where keiki and families can share their experiences, find comfort, and heal among peers who understand.

What we can learn from these students is:
💜 There are still people that love you
💜 Death will happen - when it does, keep moving forward
💜 Don’t blame yourself
💜 Appreciate the people that you have in your life
💜 Spend time with people when you can
💜 You still have a connection to the person who died
💜 Remember that the person who died will always be with you
💜 You can think about other things besides the person who died and that’s ok
💜 It’s ok not to cry
💜 It is good to cry and it’s good to not cry
💜 It is hard to learn about death
💜 Spend time with the people that you love when they are alive

Grief is not something to “fix”—it’s something to hold with care, patience, and aloha.

As we lead up to this important day, we invite our community to reflect on how we can continue to support one another through loss and remembrance. Share your stories to inspire others.

✍️ August is Make‑a‑Will Month ✍️

Did you know that 2 out of 3 adults don’t have a will?
Whether you own a home or not, a will is one of the most important ways to protect your loved ones, ensure your wishes are honored, and make things easier for your family.

A will allows you to:
✅ Name guardians for children and pets
✅ Decide how your assets are distributed
✅ Support the people and causes you care about

Without one, state laws (not you) will decide.
This month, take a moment to reflect on your plans. It’s never too early to put your wishes in writing.

💜 A Heartfelt Mahalo from One of Our Families 💜

Every message we receive is a powerful reminder of why we do this work. Recently, we received this beautiful handwritten note from a patient’s family, expressing their gratitude for the care and compassion they experienced through Hospice Maui.

While we don’t do this for recognition, knowing that our care has brought comfort and peace during life’s most vulnerable moments is deeply meaningful to all of us.

To the families who trust us with their loved ones, we are honored to walk alongside you.

🌺 Mahalo for a Wonderful AARP Hawaiʻi Event! 🌺

Hospice Maui volunteers had the privilege of connecting with community members at the AARP Hawaii event. We are so grateful to AARP Hawai'i for hosting, and to Congresswoman Jill Tokuda for joining and sharing her mana‘o with attendees.

It was heartwarming to hear so many kind words about Hospice Maui, especially from those who have experienced our care firsthand. Our patient families are truly our best advocates, and we are honored by their trust.

One of the highlights of the day was the strong interest in the Five Wishes booklet; a helpful tool for starting important conversations about care planning. These conversations are a gift for ourselves and our loved ones. If you are interested in a copy, call our office for more information: (808) 244-5555

Today, we acknowledge Hawaiʻi Statehood Day, marking the day Hawaiʻi became the 50th state of the United States in 1959.

For many, this is a day of complex emotions; a time to reflect on Hawaiʻi’s rich history, diverse cultures, and the deep connection to this land and its people. It’s also an opportunity to honor the ongoing journey of understanding, healing, and respect for the unique identity of Hawaiʻi and its native people.

At Hospice Maui, we are reminded of the importance of community, kuleana, and the aloha that guides how we care for one another.

🌈 New Resources for Families: Pediatric Palliative Care & Bereavement Support Brochures Now Available 🌈

When a child faces a serious or life-limiting illness, families deserve compassionate, comprehensive care, not just for medical needs, but for emotional and spiritual well-being too.

Our new Pediatric Palliative Care brochure explains how children can receive both curative treatments and supportive home-based palliative care. Hospice Maui’s family-centered approach focuses on enhancing quality of life and walking alongside families every step of the way.

We know that no one should face these challenges alone. That’s why we’re also introducing our Bereavement & Grief Support brochure, offering information on free in-person and online support groups. These groups provide a safe, compassionate space to share experiences, express emotions, and heal in community.

These resources are part of Hospice Maui’s commitment to ensuring families have access to clear, compassionate information when it’s needed most.

Pick up a copy at our office. (808) 244-5555

🌺 Maui Wildfire Remembrance — Honoring Our Community, Together 🌺

This week marks the two-year anniversary of the devastating wildfires that forever changed our Maui community. For many, this is a time of remembrance, reflection, and continued healing.

Each of us carries our own memories of that time; whether through personal loss, supporting others, or witnessing the incredible resilience of our community. We recognize that remembrance looks different for everyone. Some may participate in community-led gatherings, like the Lahaina paddle out, while others may reflect quietly with family.

At Hospice Maui, we will be holding space for reflection during our Morning Circle on Friday at 9:00 AM, with a collective moment of silence to honor:
Those we lost
Those who continue to grieve
The strength and unity of our Maui community

We invite you to join us in spirit, wherever you are, as we pause to remember and stand together in compassion and aloha.

Mahalo to everyone who continues to care, support, and uplift our island ʻohana. 💜🙏
