FAQ Friday 🌱
Can I drink peppermint tea while breastfeeding?
✨ Peppermint is wonderful for digestion, nausea, and cooling the body. Peppermint is the ultimate comfort herb. It cools the body, helps with nausea, eases gas + bloating, settles headaches, and can even help with mental focus. It is one of those herbs that feels like such a fresh breath of relief whenever you need it the most.
⚠️ Here is what many mamas may not know. Peppermint is a strong “drying” herb. As much as it can dry excess mucus, it can also dry a supply of milk for some breastfeeding mothers when taken daily or in large amounts when nursing. This is why midwives and herbologists recommend peppermint (or even peppermint oil on the breasts) when mama is ready to wean.
👶 So what does that mean for you?
• One cup of peppermint tea occasionally for belly relief should be perfectly okay.
• Daily peppermint while working on keeping or increasing milk supply may not serve you well.
💡 Gentle alternatives for nursing mamas:
• Oatstraw 🌾- is highly nutritive, supportive to mama’s nervous system, and supportive to milk supply.
• Raspberry Leaf 🍃- tones the womb, full of minerals, gentle support for postpartum recovery.
• Fennel (as a caution note) 🌱- is very often used in low amounts when providing digestive support + for increased milk supply.
