Let's do something new! And let's bring the kids! The cost for this is $10 per child, no charge for adults.
I'm going to combine some of my passions - gardening, food, kids, and coaching. This spring, I'm going to tear out most of the plants in the studio garden. I'll leave thyme, oregano, chives, and sage, and the medicinal and edible flowers like echinacea (purple coneflower). I'm going to plant a variety of cucumbers and tomatoes to grow vertically on twine, sweet peppers, carrots, radishes, and greens.
I'm building a group coaching program around this. Each week, five or six kids and one adult per child will come to the studio garden to learn a little about growing the food that we'll eat. It's an educational food and drink tasting experience. We'll nibble on herbs and try fruits and vegetables that are ripe. We can compare varieties of tomatoes, carrots, radishes, peppers, and cucumbers.
We'll talk about eating seasonally.
I have, plum and pear trees, and raspberries and blackberries. I'll get strawberries and blueberries. If we're having salad, each person will make a small jar of salad dressing with olive oil, fresh squeezed lemon juice, sea salt, fresh and dried herbs, honey, and vinegar. Bring your own jar!
For drinks, we'll have water with things to add. Slices of lemon, lime or orange, crushed strawberries or blueberries, slices of cucumber, herbs... Thinking ahead to chilly days, imagine homemade hot chocolate with a fresh chocolate mint (it's a real thing!) garnish.
We'll talk about our food stories. What do we love?? What do we wish we never had to eat again? What's our favorite food? What foods do we eat because they're part of our family traditions and culture? What do we wish we could try?
For those of you who don't know me - I have a lot of experience working with kids. I was a Girl Scout leader, service unit manager, and worked for the Girl Scout Council when my kids were growing up. I worked and volunteered in Princeton Elementary, East Range II, and Woodland Jr/Sr High School. I'm a former master gardener, and I've gardened all my life. I'm a functional medicine certified health coach with the additional training as a functional nutrition specialist. I'm not a nutritionist or dietician.
Separate from this, as a functional nutrition specialist, I work with people as they make lifestyle changes to improve their health and wellness through food choices. It's important to understand why we eat the way we do as a means of making lasting changes. That's not something we'll explore in this group, but it gives you information on my background and training.
I don't anticipate starting this until closer to when school gets out. Each group will last an hour or two. Every child doesn't have to have an adult as long as there's an adult with each child. Someone might come with two kids instead of one.
