My Thanksgiving tips
Thanksgiving for many begins a season of overeating, indulging in sweets and in general, celebrating with food and drink. It can be hard to stick to your nutrition goals, especially when friends, family and colleagues donβt share the same healthy eating ideals. Here are three tips to survive Turkey Day from our Nutritionist, Nicole:
1. Have a SMALL portion of everything. With so many different dishes on the table, it can be easy to eat too much, especially when the family mindset is to eat until you burst. Have a few bites of each food, and put the focus on your favorites.
2. Skip the stuffing and other dense carbs like the dinner roll, rice and anything topped with marshmallows. A cup of mashed potatoes will have half the carbs of a cup of stuffing. Anchor your meal with protein (looking at you, turkey) and colorful veggies.
3. Eat the pie filling but skip the crust. It may be tasty, but its all refined flour and bad fats. Volunteer to bring a healthier dessert that you can make with nutrient dense ingredients like almond flour, coconut oil and maple syrup.
Bonus Tip β Choose water over wine. It will prevent you from making poor eating decisions and studies show that drinking 17 oz. of water before a meal will boost resting metabolism by about 30% for an hour β likely enough to burn off the extra calories you will consume.
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy Thanksgiving!
