It's more difficult for the stabilizing muscles of the core to do their job while you sit. When you sit the muscles of your buttocks stretch so they lose the effectiveness in supporting the position of your pelvis. Your core muscles, and especially your spinal muscles have to work overtime to keep you upright. This is why sitting is so fatiguing to the body.

When you take in a breath of air, you should see your chest expand and ribs move out to the side. If your chest is tight, it makes this expansion difficult.
