The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves". It is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of having a doula present. These include:
~50% reduction in cesarean sections
~25% decrease i
n the length of labor
~decrease in the use of oxytocin by 40%
~decrease of 60% in requests for an epidural
A recent Cochrane Review, "Continuous Support for Women During Childbirth", revealed numerous advantages in having a doula present during labor. "Women who received continuous labour support were more likely to give birth 'spontaneously', i.e. In addition, women were less likely to use pain medications, were more likely to be satisfied, and had slightly shorter labours. Their babies were less likely to have low 5-minute Apgar Scores. No adverse effects were identified. We conclude that all women should have continuous support during labour. Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman's social network, is experienced in providing labour support, and has at least a modest amount of training, appears to be most beneficial." "If a doula were a drug it would be unethical not to use it."
