Schmitt Funeral Homes is proud to announce that Caleb Flax is now the licensed Funeral Director in charge at its WaKeeney and Quinter locations.
Caleb has been part of the Schmitt Funeral Homes team since 2022 and is well known throughout the community. Born and raised in WaKeeney, he comes from a family name long associated with trustworthiness and professionalism, and he is honored to continue that tradition while caring for the community’s loved ones and grieving families during some of the most difficult times of their lives.
In 2024, Caleb graduated from Des Moines Area Community College with an Advanced Standing Diploma in Mortuary Science. He successfully passed the National Board Examinations in Funeral Service Arts and Funeral Service Sciences, and then completed his Funeral Director and Embalmer apprenticeships under Joel Fitzgerald II. In May of 2025, after passing the Kansas Board of Mortuary Arts Law Examination, Caleb became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in the State of Kansas.
In October of 2025, Caleb further expanded his ability to serve families by passing the Kansas Life Producer Examination, becoming a licensed preneed funeral insurance producer. This allows him to assist individuals and families with preplanning, prearranging, and creating preneed insurance policies, directly in-house, to fund those arrangements. Planning ahead can provide peace of mind, ensure wishes are clearly documented, and ease the emotional and financial burden placed on loved ones.
Many community members know Caleb from his work in computer and technology services. Through that experience, he developed strong communication, planning, and technical skills. These qualities now serve families in meaningful ways, from carefully organizing arrangements to creating unique, personalized service materials. What began as a professional path in information technology ultimately led him to a calling in funeral service, where he has found profound meaning, and is deeply grateful to serve as a familiar and trusted presence.
Caleb lives in WaKeeney with his fiancée, Sierra, and their children, Tatum, Leland, and Landon. They are engaged to be married on June 20, 2026. Family, faith, and community remain at the heart of both his personal life and his approach to funeral service, and he is proud to support the community he calls home.
Caleb welcomes anyone in the community to reach out for a personal, no-pressure appointment. Whether you wish to discuss a recent loss, review existing arrangements, plan ahead for yourself or a loved one, or explore prefunding options, he is available to sit down and visit about as much—or as little—as you would like.
