25 Years Experience

Historically in Asia acupuncture has been a popular and effective health care tool accessible to most everyone. When acupuncture came to this country it became specialized and expensive, inaccessible for the majority of the population. Acupuncture has the potential to play a huge role on the front line of health care, because it treats so many ailments so effectively. This potential can only be realized if people can afford to be treated. The community acupuncture movement is about renewing accessibility to the benefits of acupuncture. Acupuncturists are creating clinics where patients can be seen at affordable rates, and can get treated with the frequency required to make real and lasting benefits to health. I have been a practicing acupuncturist for 25 years. My experience has demonstrated the power and potential of this medicine. The biggest factor limiting the good I could do was that so many people could not afford to come see me. Sure, there have been many patients I treated for a discount or for no charge, but after many years in practice I always had new patients who could pay the full price, at least for a while. Like most acupuncturists, I am self employed and have to watch the bottom line. So often I would run into someone with tennis elbow or a bad back or headaches that I knew would respond well to treatment, and quickly. It would take me 3 minutes and 9 needles, so simple, I could already see the treatment plan in my mind. But in my current practice, I needed to do an hour long health history and intake and charge a lot of money before I could do the treatment. In my practice I do see complex cases where a full intake is necessary to make a diagnosis and treat with the many tools of Chinese medicine, including lifestyle counseling, herbal therapy, moxabustion, and acupuncture. The reality is that such an extensive intake is not always necessary. But there was only one model of practice, and it was expensive and therefore not an option for many. The community clinic is a model that streamlines the treatment process. Simplifying and shortening the treatment process allows us to charge less. In the 10 weeks since I have started All In Community Acupuncture I have been gratified to see old patients return to continue treatment, and new patients who would otherwise not have gotten treated. As in my regular practice, sometimes the results are gradual and sometimes they are dramatic. Yesterday I saw a patient for the third time whose total energy had changed, with no more allergy headaches or digestive difficulties, and much better sleep. I have also been gratified to see mothers bringing in their teenage kids for treatment, and others bringing in an elderly parent, everyone receiving treatment together in our peaceful clinic space. Thus far, All In Community Acupuncture has gone a little way in realizing the intention of its name: getting ALL of the family, ALL of the people, IN for acupuncture. All In Community Acupuncture is still an experiment in progress, but for the first group of happy patients it does seem that they are indeed, All In.
