Don't get Phished. Remind your loved one not to respond to emails from people they don't know or to emails they didn't expect to receive. This scam technique known as phishing, pretends to originate from a trusted resource like Medicare or Social Security. How can you be sure? Check the actual "from" email address. It may show differently than the description.

It's important to check your Medical Summary Notice (if you have original Medicare) or your Explanation of Benefits (if you have a Medicare Advantage Plan) for any items — like back braces and lab tests — that Medicare paid for, but that you never ordered or received.

It's important to report the abuse. If Medicare has paid for an item in the past, you may not be able to receive it again when you really need it — regardless of whether you actually received it. Report the abuse by visiting our website at www.shiip.iowa.gov for more information or call us at 1-800-351-4664 for assistance.

In 2018, Medicare removed social security numbers and replaced it with a combination of letters and numbers. When these new cards were being issued, this gave scammers the perfect opportunity to try and steal your medical identity. They are at it again!

If you receive a phone call that is trying to convince you that Medicare is switching to plastic cards with a chip, just hang up. This is not true and is a Medicare card scam. Contact us at 1-800-351-4664 to report if you have received this phone call or if you have given out your Medicare number.
