🔥 Grilling Season is Here! Keep the Char on the Burgers, Not Your House. 🍔

Happy first week of June, Wall Township! As we kick off the warm weather, many of us are dusting off the patio furniture and firing up the propane grills. Before you cook up a feast, the Wall Township Fire Prevention Bureau wants to remind you of a few essential propane safety steps to keep your family and home safe:

Check for Leaks (The Soap Test): Apply a 50/50 solution of soap and water to the hose and connections. Turn the propane on (with the grill lid open!). If you see bubbles forming, you have a leak. Tighten the connections or replace the hose before cooking.

Location, Location, Location: Keep your grill at least 10 feet away from your house, deck railings, vinyl siding, and out from under overhanging branches or roof eaves.

Look Before You Light: Always open the grill lid before lighting it. Turning on the gas with the lid closed can cause propane to build up and create an explosive flash fire when ignited.

Clean the Grease: Regularly clear out grease tray buildup. A clean grill prevents dangerous grease fires that can quickly get out of hand.

Never Leave it Lonely: An unattended grill is a hazard. Designate a "Grill Master" to stay with the station until the food is done and the gas is turned completely off.

Let’s look out for one another and ensure a safe, fire-free summer! If you ever smell gas while grilling, safely step away immediately and call 911.

Is your home ready for wildfire season? 🌲🔥

During "Spring Cleaning," we often focus on the inside of our homes, but what’s happening outside is just as important. The Wall Twp Fire Prevention Bureau wants to remind residents that creating Defensible Space is the most effective way to protect your property from wildfires.

Why it matters: During a wildfire, "ember showers" can travel miles ahead of the main flame front. If those embers land in dry brush or leaf litter next to your house, they can ignite your home before the fire ever reaches your neighborhood.

3 Key Steps to Take Today:

The Immediate Zone (0-5ft): This is the most important area. Remove all flammable vegetation, wood piles, and debris from this perimeter.

The Intermediate Zone (5-30ft): Keep grass mowed to 4 inches or less. Create "fuel breaks" with stone paths or driveways.

The Extended Zone (30-100ft): Thin out trees and remove "ladder fuels" (low-hanging branches) that allow fire to climb into the canopy.

Let’s work together to keep our community safe. Post a photo of your cleared yard below to inspire your neighbors! 👇

Is Your E-Bike a Fire Risk? Let’s Talk Battery Safety. 🔋🔥

As more of our neighbors switch to e-bikes and scooters, our Fire Prevention Bureau wants to make sure everyone is "charging smart." Lithium-ion batteries are generally safe, but when they malfunction, they produce intense fires that are incredibly difficult to extinguish.

Protect your family and your home by following these essential tips:

✅ Use the Right Gear: Only use the battery and charger provided by the manufacturer. Using mismatched power cords can lead to overheating and "thermal runaway."

✅ Location Matters: Charge your device on a flat, non-combustible surface. Avoid charging on laundry, furniture, or rugs. A garage or a tiled area is always your best bet.

✅ Keep Watch: Never leave your battery charging overnight while you sleep or when you aren't home.

✅ Cool Down: Let your battery cool after a long ride before plugging it in.

Celebrating Autism Acceptance Month: Safety for Every Spectrum ♾️🚒

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and the Wall Township Fire Bureau is committed to ensuring that our fire safety outreach reaches every member of our community.

For many individuals on the autism spectrum, emergency situations present unique challenges—from sensory sensitivities to loud sirens to the unpredictability of a fire drill. We want to help you bridge that gap.

How to prepare your neurodivergent household:

Practice "Safety Drill Saturdays": Consistency is key. Make escaping the house a routine part of your weekend so it becomes muscle memory.

The "Go-Bag" Check: Ensure any "Go-Bags" include comfort items or noise-canceling headphones to help manage the transition once outside.

Visit the Station: We’d love to meet you! Familiarizing your loved one with the look of a firefighter in full gear (masks and all) can reduce "stranger danger" during a real emergency.

From the members and staff of the Wall Township Fire Bureau, a very Happy Easter to all.
