One of the most common Google searches in our field is something we specialize in treating:
“Ringing in the ears.”

Also known as tinnitus, this is when a person hears buzzing, hissing, or other sounds that aren’t actually present in their environment. There are many possible causes, but the leading cause is hearing loss itself. When the brain is used to receiving more sound than it does, it often tries to “fill in the silence”—unfortunately, it’s not very good at it!
