On October 21, 2025, we issued a press release regarding an attempted carjacking at knifepoint near downtown Walla Walla on October 16. In that release, we highlighted the courageous actions of a citizen who placed himself in harm’s way to protect the victim.
Last night, the Walla Walla City Council and Chief Buttice had the honor of recognizing that individual — Francisco Chavez — for his extraordinary bravery.
The City Council presented Francisco with a Letter of Recognition, which reads in part:
“In recognition of extraordinary bravery and decisive action during a life-threatening incident on October 16, 2025, the City of Walla Walla proudly honors Francisco Chavez for his courageous intervention in an attempted carjacking. Without hesitation and without regard for his own safety, Mr. Chavez confronted an armed attacker, creating lifesaving distance between the victim and the assailant and preventing further harm. His actions reflect the highest values of courage, civic duty, and compassion. The City of Walla Walla hereby presents this Letter of Recognition and Lifesaving Award to Francisco Chavez.”
Chief Buttice also presented Francisco with a plaque from the Walla Walla Police Foundation, which reads:
“In recognition of exceptional bravery during an armed carjacking on October 16, 2025. Your courageous actions saved a life and reflect the highest spirit of heroism and civic duty.”
Francisco — you are a true hero, and our community is safer because of your willingness to act.
