Functional Performance and Athletics: Doctors of Physical Therapy

Functional Performance and Athletics: Doctors of Physical Therapy A physical therapy practice that desires to provide the highest quality of care in the most effient and effective manner!

Functional Performance and Athletics: Doctors of Physical Therapy was started on the desire to provide patient's with the highest level of physical therapy care and skilled interventions from any location (your home, gym, my home). Through working at various jobs over the years, I have seen more emphasis on making money in healthcare as opposed to providing the most optimal care for each patient.

When I began physical therapy school, my sole desire was to be the best practitioner I could be. Through my work experiences, I have found it difficult to provide the best possible care for each and every patient that I have come across due to time constraints, productivity requirements, the need to delegate to Physical Therapy Assistants, and only being able perform limited treatment interventions because "insurance doesn't cover that." Functional Performance and Athletics: Doctors of Physical Therapy was created to provide the best possible care to EACH patient that I come into contact with. Essentially, I want to return a patient to full function in the shortest possible amount of time.

We are looking to add another Physical Therapist to our team. This clinic got started because I was told by my supervisor when I worked for a hospital system that I cared too much. “You’ll never make it in healthcare if you care that much Matt” were the exact words. I quit that job that very day.

I’ve since added another PT, Dr. Kelly Maher, who is a savage at this game as well. We’re looking to add another badass. I’m looking to hire the right person, this is not just based on your skills. We can teach skills, we can’t teach you to give a s**t. I want someone who gives a damn about the human being in front of them EVERY DAY is my biggest request. If you don’t want to take work home from time to time, then you’re likely not the fit. I want someone striving to be the best so I expect you to dive at things that stumped you that day to ensure you give better care the next time. Our environment is super chill and some may say it lacks some professionalism. We are as real with our patients as we can be. We swear from time to time, we wear whatever we want, we crack the occasional crude joke, but we are real people just like the patient in front of us. We are a performance-based facility that sees a ton of highly motivated high school/college athletes and a whole bunch of everyday athletes who want to get in and out of here as fast as they can. That’s where you come in! Fire at me!

This ⬆️ picture means the world to me.

🔹I don’t usually post about patient stuff. It’s not my journey, it’s their journey. I just guide it. But this patient’s journey has been my most important one to date. For those who don’t know, this is WSP Trooper Dean Atkinson. His story went national when he was shot 4-5 times in the face and hand while in his patrol car just out protecting this community that I work in and love. He then proceeded to drive himself to the ER and thankfully we get to have him here with us today.

🔹I was fortunate enough to get Dean as a patient as we were connected through mutual friends. I’ll never forget our first day. We established on the first day that the goal was to return back to full duty with no restrictions, impressive in itself as this incident would break a lesser man. I was looking at a 160lb guy, a shadow of his old self. His face and hand were missing a few pieces from the gunshots and multiple surgeries that followed. His left hand was non-functional. We had an immediate bond though. I, too, know what it feels like to have another human try and take your life. The psychology of that I hope few have to experience. My only two requests from Dean was that he worked his ass off and when he got back to full duty he’d come by and give me a hug. Hence, the 📸 above.

It was a brutally tough road, if you’ve been a patient of mine you know I push the limits a bit and Dean certainly didn’t get the special treatment. The pain involved in the early phase to get that hand functional was high. Soreness was brutal, but Dean never once bi***ed. Never once gave me a “poor me” speech. He just put his head down and flat worked. Worked to get back to being able to serve and protect the rest of us wussies sitting in our cushy jobs. Most of us don’t go to work and have to worry about not coming home. Dean worked to get back to this point with a relentless drive, no one knows how hard it really was except Dean and I.

🔹Please read on in the comments for the rest of it🔹

🐈Pet Peeve: NOT training while in-season
✔️If you don’t train in-season for whatever 🐂💩reason, you’re missing out on MONTHS of getting better athletically. Biggest difference between the vast majority of D-1 athletes and a JUCO kid is strength. Not athleticism as one would suspect. You simply got out-trained by another equally talented kid who wasn’t making an excuse to skip the gym.
✔️In-season training doesn’t have to be wildly different then out-of-season training
Pic1️⃣: In-season athlete, my dude COOOHH. We’re playing a tempo game for a few weeks with both in and out-of-season athletes currently. Cohen is just using a boxed variation, just above parallel, to break up the concentric and eccentric motions of the squat. Allows him to build his power output, but concentrically focused to mitigate soreness while still pushing his strength/power base upwards
Pic 2️⃣: Out-of-seaon athlete, my girl Cami. Still playing a tempo game, but she’s having to maintain maximal tension for a solid 3 seconds in the toughest portion of the movement while still trying to 🚀out of the hole to ensure proper output
💥Cami will be more sore from this then Cohen, yet both still gain positive athletic attributes which clearly is the goal in this environment💥 Be more like these 2!
