Our Visitor and Floor Plan Guides are easy and inexpensive to update. Hospitals not only move departments and build new additions, they can also change health systems. Back in 2010 we designed a map for Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, OR. Since that time the hospital has joined CHI to become CHI Mercy Health. We are always available to revise simple things like a logo change to adding new buildings and additions. Our clients always get the Illustrator files of their maps so they can update them as well.

Our company obviously loves wayfinding and helping people navigate through built environments. Our mapping tools are one component of a successful wayfinding system. When I visit a hospital to collect the mapping information I always notice the ways they communicate wayfinding. While I have performed a wayfinding analysis for a few hospitals, one component I leave to the other experts is signage. I leave the photo below as one of the reasons why I avoid anything to do with signs.

I want to personally thank all the health care professionals during these crazy times. While a pandemic is something we knew could possibly happen, now that it is happening the health providers are on the front line to do their best to comfort patients and address the coronavirus. It's truly heartbreaking to know people are suffering and dying without their loved ones, but the hospital staff is there doing the what they do best - taking care of people.

One of our clients, Mission Health in Asheville, recently reached out to us to modify a campus map we designed to reflect restricted entrances that had temperature check points. During these critical times it is vital to communicate important information as easily and effective as possible. Thank you Mission Health for being there for others.

On June 8th we celebrated our 10 year anniversary for Maps for Hospitals. What started as an idea on the beach of Hunting Island State Park has turned into a passion to provide affordable maps that work for hospitals across our country. We have created attractive and functional maps for over 200 hospital campuses with several additional projects in process. Our business would have never happened without our dedicated lead designer, Christie. Her skills to take marked up maps and photographs and transform them into easy to understand maps are incredible. Not only is Christie a top notch designer she is also an awesome individual. In the photo is her wonderful daughter, Brynn, who is attending the University of Tennessee. Maps for Hospitals looks forward to helping hospitals for at least 10 more years :)

One question that we continually get is "Our hospital is about to go through a renovation. Should we produce a map before the construction or what until the renovation is complete?" While our maps are an excellent wayfinding and marketing tool to have ready when the renovations are complete, we can design maps during the construction to depict the altered vehicular and pedestrian flow. Attached is a map we designer for RiverView Health in Minnesota that shows the construction area on the campus and floor plan maps. The main entrance is now at the back of the campus, which can be confusing to visitors. Once the construction is complete we will remove the construction area indicators and complete the maps with the new areas and destinations. Revising the maps to depict the renovated areas takes very little designer time, so there is only the initial expense of drawing the base maps. We know hospitals are continually growing and departments are moving. We are always available to help modify your maps as changes are made. Our base maps are the last maps you may ever need for your hospital.

There was a recent editorial in the local paper, The Daily Times, that discusses the use of paper versus digital maps. Printed maps are an invaluable tool in the hospital environment. The maps clearly display the public destinations and how to get there. A patient or visitor may be led to a destination but then it is up to them to find their way back to their car or pick up location. Having a map that they can study will help them understand the flow and layout of the campus. Printed maps can also contain additional hospital information, such as cafeteria hours, visiting hours, parking information, etc.

We live in a digital age but existing tools such as paper maps go a long way in helping someone navigate an area. Enjoy the editorial.

Why paper maps still matter in the digital device age

With the proliferation of smartphones, it’s easy to assume that the era of the paper map is over. That attitude, that digital is better than print, is what I call “technochauvinism.” In my book, “Artificial Unintelligence:How Computers Misunderstand the World,” I look at how technochauvinism has been used to create an unnecessary, occasionally harmful bias for digital over print or any other kind of interface.

YOUR BRAIN ON MAPS

Cognitive researchers generally make a distinction between surface knowledge and deep knowledge. Experts have deep knowledge of a subject or a geography; amateurs have surface knowledge. Digital interfaces are good for acquiring surface knowledge. Answering the question, “How do I get from the airport to my hotel in a new-to-me city?” is a pragmatic problem that requires only shallow information to answer.

Print maps help you acquire deep knowledge faster and more efficiently. In experiments, people who read on paper consistently demonstrate better reading comprehension than people who read the same material on a screen. A 2013 study showed that, as a person’s geographic skill increases, so does their preference for paper maps.

Reading in print makes it easier for the brain to encode knowledge and to remember things. Sensory cues, like unfolding the complicated folds of a paper map, help create that cognitive map in the brain and help the brain to retain the knowledge.

MAP MISTAKES

Another factor in the paper versus digital debate is accuracy. Obviously, a good digital map is better than a bad paper map, just like a good paper map is better than a bad digital map. Fanatical attention to detail is necessary to keep digital maps up to date, as conditions in the real world change constantly. Companies like Google are constantly updating their maps, and will have to do so regularly for as long as they continue to publish. The maintenance required for digital content is substantial — a cost that technochauvinists often ignore.

In my view, it’s easier to forgive the errors in a paper map. Physical maps usually include an easily visible publication date so users can see when the map was published. (When was the last time you noticed the date-of-last-update on your car navigation system?) When you are passively following the spoken GPS directions of a navigation system, and there is, say, an unmarked exit, it confuses the GPS system and causes chaos among the people in the car. (Especially the back-seat drivers.)

THE BEST MAP FOR THE JOB

A technochauvinist mindset assumes everything in the future will be digital. But what happens if a major company like Google stops offering its maps? What happens when a government shutdown means that satellite data powering smartphone GPS systems isn’t transmitted? Right now, ambulances and fire trucks can keep a road atlas in the front seat in case electronic navigation fails. If society doesn’t maintain physical maps, first responders won’t be able to get to addresses when there is a fire or someone is critically ill. Interrupting a country’s GPS signals is also a realistic cyberwarfare tactic.

The U.S. Navy has resumed training new recruits in celestial navigation, a technique that dates back to ancient Greece, as a guard against when the digital grid gets hacked.

Ultimately, I don’t think it should be a competition between physical and digital. In the future, people will continue to need both kinds of maps. Instead of arguing whether paper or digital is a better map interface, people should consider what map is the right tool for the task.

A site visit to a hospital is included in most of our mapping projects. The visit is important since it allows us to understand first hand any wayfinding issues that needs addressing by the maps. We also collect the interior mapping information, saving our clients valuable time and effort. The visit also allows us to discuss what to include in the maps while we are walking the halls.

Since we map hospitals across the country we get to visit unique places and hospitals. We have traveled the country from Astoria, OR to NYC to Flagstaff, AZ to Boca Raton, FL. Each place has it's unique qualities and personality.

One hospital we recently visited was in St. George, UT, close to Zion National Park and other beautiful natural areas. We completed a Visitor Guide for Dixie Regional Medical Center and a Floor Plan Guide of their new Cancer Center. Please note that the grey area on the cover panel of the Visitor Guide is for a photo of the main entrance. The hospital entrance area was being renovated when the maps were approved and the client wanted to insert a photo of the entrance when the area was complete. That's one of the reasons why we always send an editable Illustrator file to our clients, in addition to regular and printable PDFs.

We always encourage our clients to distribute their maps as many ways as possible to reach as many people as possible. A successful mapping tool will go a long way to create a positive impression of the hospital. We recently got a request from a hospital near San Antonio to create a vicinity map of their hospital and satellite locations. The end product was a 5" x 7" postcard they are using for a mailing. We always offer the print and Illustrator files for Visitor Guides, Floor Plan Guides, Vicinity Maps, and Individual Maps. The more the maps are utilized the easier your valuable patients and visitors will find their way - then back to where they began.

At Maps for Hospitals we understand that sometimes a simple floor plan map can be an effective wayfinding tool. This type of map is economical, effective, and easy to print. Attached is a map that we designed for Ocean Medical Center in New Jersey. The floor plan map included pull thru areas at entrances and parking areas adjacent to the hospital. Need an effective map at a low cost? The floor plan map is for you!

Happy almost Spring everyone! This past winter we helped another HCA/TriStar colleague by mapping the Parkridge Medical Center and Parkridge East Hospital campuses. We also got a request by a colleague at Eastside Medical Center (who was formerly at Brandon Regional Medical Center, see post below) to produce an impressive 3-D rendering of their campus. A couple of years ago we completed an impressive Visitor Guide that featured the 2-D campus map. The client saw the value of the 3-D rendering at Brandon Regional and wanted the same for Eastside. In the process we also updated their single page floor plan map. The client also requested a vicinity map that shows the Eastside related locations around the Snellville, GA area. Attached are images of the Visitor Guide with the 2-D campus map, the 3-D rendering, the floor plan map, and the vicinity map. In addition, we also created an interactive map - http://eastside.hospitalmap.com/html5/ -that can be viewed on desktop computers, smartphones, and tablets. The interactive map not only provides directions to the locations, it also is an effective marketing tool by having valuable promotional information about the location in the pop up box. Our complete mapping system helps to reach as many valuable patients and visitors as possible to help them find their way - then back to where they began.

Maps for Hospitals works with HospitalMaps to create impressive interactive maps that work. The interactive software adjusts the user interface to the device being used (desktop computer, tablet, smartphone). Each map location has a Point of Interest which can contain informational text, directions, photos, videos, virtual tours, and links to webpages, social media, driving directions, documents, email addresses, and phone numbers. The interactive maps are extremely affordable and help bolster your hospital's image and wayfinding capabilities. You can view an interactivemap we recently completed for the HCA Riverside Community Hospital at http://riverside.hospitalmap.com/html5/

It's been a great Spring here at Maps for Hospitals and it's onward with the summer heat. One of our primary goals at Maps for Hospitals is to get high quality, attractive maps in the hands of as many patients and visitors as possible. Our primary product is our impressive Visitor Guide that can be formatted to almost any size. We saw a demand for a smaller piece that could be distributed once a person is inside the hospital. So for every project we now produce a double sided, letter size piece at no additional cost that includes the floor plans and basic hospital information. These maps can be padded so they are easy to keep together and distributed. We have included a Visitor Guide and letter size piece we designed for Allegan General Hospital in Allegan, MI. And we provide each map individually so they can be added to marketing materials, patient guides, etc. We offer You Are Here maps which can be installed at key decision points. And finally, we can make the maps interactive so a person can easily search and find a destination in a medical center. Our complete mapping system is a successful way to help your valuable patients and visitors find their destination - then back to where they began.

And here is a comment from a client in Santa Barbara, CA "Thanks again for all your work – we extremely happy with how this project has turned out.". We are always available to update the maps in the future. So let Maps for Hospitals help you create a wonderful mapping system that works!

Hello Everyone. I just finished a conference call with a group at a healthcare system in North Carolina and they noted that they are in the infancy stages of understanding wayfinding and it's relationship to customer satisfaction. I congratulated them on recognizing the need for wayfinding. Most patients and visitors have to walk or be led to locations in the hospital, be it a registration desk, bathroom, coffee shop, or waiting area. Then they need to go back to where they started. Wayfinding information and techniques can be made available to help someone find their way, and back to where they began. Our mapping systems are a key tool in a hospital wayfinding system. In today's age of instant reviews on websites a first impression, which involves not being lost and feeling welcomed, goes a long way with customer satisfaction.
