Her time had come. Throughout her lifetime she was forever thankful for His unfailing love for her, His unending blessings upon her, His divine and perfect wisdom, His quiet strength, His trusted timing for her life, and His promise of new life. In the way that she lived her life, Hortense Emma Kilpatrick passed away with grace and dignity into the light and presence of God on the 17th of October, 2025.

She began her journey into the world on March 17, 1941 and was the first child and only daughter born to Alice Mae and Madison Lionel Kilpatrick, Sr. Hortense was grateful for her loving and devoted brothers Madison Lionel Jr., and Kollye Wendell who were an important part of her life. In them she found an enduring support system, ac connection through a shared and proud history, lifelong trust, and resilience. During her lifetime they offered the best kind of gift. It was a gift of meaningful, unwavering, and an irreplaceable friendship guided by their faith. Love never ends.

Her father, Madison Lionel, Sr., had deep 19th and 20th century ancestral roots in Southeast Texas including his beloved mother Emma and his father Collie Kilpatrick. During the period of Reconstruction in the United States, archival records show that his grandfather Madison Matthew Kilpatrick, a legendary figure in state history, was the first-elected treasurer of Waller County, Texas (1873). With the historical significance and richness of the time that preceded him, it was a natural attraction some 67 years, hence, that her parents wisely decided to make their permanent home in the community of Prairie View.

Nestled around the first-state supported college for African Americans in Texas and the second oldest public institution of higher education in the state now known as Prairie View A&M University, could be found the college community where Hortense was born and spent her early life. Her personal history began in the academic environment of Prairie View.

From the time she began kindergarten and later attended the Rosenwald School on the College campus, and was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree, historic Prairie View became her enlightened reality.

Hortense was a proud member of the A.K.A. Sorority.

Buttressed by a rich ancestral history, a birth family that anchored her, the opportunity to spend her formative years in the academic place setting of Prairie View and its adjoining community, were important institutional elements that contributed to Hortense’s prioritizing education, developing a thirst for lifelong learning, seizing opportunities to live and experience her live beyond the South, to choosing a rewarding career path, and so much more…

In her 2021 memoir titled "An African American Woman’s Childhood in Segregated Southeast Texas”, Hortense acknowledged Dr. Edward B. Evans, the first-president of Prairie View A&M College with whom she worked as an office student assistant prior to graduating from college. With his prominent stature in higher education, he opened the door for her first professional assignment. Her innermost dreams to live and work in the state of New York of Westchester County was realized and fulfilled. Thus, the marked element that contributed to her remarkable journey.

Hortense is preceded in death by her parents Madison L. and Alice M. (Johnson) Kilpatrick, Sr.; sister-in-law Beverly Kilpatrick.

She is survived by brothers Madison L. Kilpatrick Jr., Kollye Kilpatrick and wife Renita; nieces and nephews Eric L. Kilpatrick, Karen R. Kilpatrick and husband Vernon, Madison L. Kilpatrick III, Menarak L. Kilpatrick; as well as many friends.

We are deeply grateful to our friends and relatives for your generous prayers, gestures of kindness and encouraging words during our time of bereavement. All have been comforting and helpful to us as we have prepared for this celebration of the victorious life of our beloved sister.

Graveside Services will be Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 2pm at Oakwood Cemetery in Hempstead, TX with Dr. Kelvin Kirby officiating.

A repast will be held from 3:00pm until 5:00pm located at the Waller County Fairgrounds, 21988 FM 359, Hempstead, TX 77445 (Edmonds Hall).

Raymond J. Phillips, age 93 of Hempstead, Texas passed away on September 15, 2025. He is preceded in death by his parents Clarence Wayne and Bertha Mae Phillips, his son Raymond James Phillips, Jr. and his wife Anita Jean Reinhardt Phillips.

Thank you for being here today to honor and remember someone truly special — our Drodrie.

There was no one quite like him. A farmer, a cattleman, a fixer, a storyteller. A man whose hands could mend anything, and whose heart always held his family first. He was our anchor, our laughter, our guide.

Drodrie had a way of turning the simplest moment into a memory worth keeping. He carried stories in his heart and shared them with humor and wit — often as a trickster, always with a twinkle in his eye. You never knew what tale he’d tell next, but you knew it would leave you smiling.

He could fix anything. And I mean anything. Whether it was a broken fence, a busted tractor, or a tangled situation — he’d find a way. Sometimes all he needed was a piece of hay string and those steady hands. His quiet strength reminded us that love doesn’t always come in grand gestures — sometimes it shows up in the everyday, in the doing, in the showing up. And Drodrie always showed up.

He was never without his faithful companion, Rat Dog, by his side. The two of them were inseparable — a pair that showed us what loyalty looks like. If you saw one, you saw the other. And together, they made us laugh, they kept us company, and they reminded us of the simple joys in life.

But above all, Drodrie’s greatest joy was his family. Most importantly the love of his life of 62 years, our sweet Nana. They were a true example of love and devotion. Their marriage stood as a shining testament of faithfulness, perseverance, and the joy of walking through life hand in hand – a true legacy. Together they showed us what it means to honor vows and to build a life of love that inspires generations. He loved deeply, worked tirelessly, and gave generously. His presence was a gift — steady, strong, and full of heart. And though we grieve today, we also celebrate. Because Drodrie lived a life filled with purpose, kindness, and resilience.
We will carry his stories, his wisdom, and his love with us always. His legacy is laughter, strength, and love — and it will continue through each of us, through every memory we share, and every lesson he taught us.

There was not another like him. And there never will be.

He is survived by his daughter Cindy L. Baker and husband Keith, sons James M. “Bubba” Phillips and wife Karen, Paul W. Phillips and wife Vicky; grandchildren Kristin Baker, Kaley Baker Council and husband Jonathan, Breanna Phillips Barry and husband Trevor, Kelton and Kade Phillips, P.J. Phillips and wife BreAnna, and Presley Phillips; great grandchildren Pasleigh Mae Phillips, Kaleb Council, Brynn Barry, Wyatt Council, TJ Barry, and Josie Rae Phillips; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation and celebrating his 94th birthday Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 8 – 11am. Services will follow at 11am at Canon Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Dobbs and Pastor Bob Craig officiating. Interment will follow at Shiloh Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, you can make donations to Shiloh Cemetery.

09/02/2025

Born in Houston, Texas on March 10, 1992, Alex Kidonakis was the third child of Gus and Thelma. He carried with him a rich blend of Mexican and Greek heritage, something that shined through in his personality, his traditions, and the way he connected with others.

Alex shared a very special bond with his mother, Thelma. She was not only an excellent cook but also a devout Catholic, and through her example, she nurtured in Alex a deep love for the Blessed Mother and Jesus—faith that remained a quiet strength in his life.

As the younger brother of Melissa and Cimela, Alex trusted his sisters and found ways to stay connected throughout the years, visiting them in college or being present every holiday get together. They cherished his storytelling, his humor, and above all, the comfort of knowing he always had their back.

Alex was brilliant and quick-witted, always ready with a clever remark that could light up a room. He had a lifelong love of classic cars and became not only one of the best salesmen you could meet, but also a true partner to his father, working tirelessly alongside him in the family car shop.

His passions extended beyond cars. Alex loved cooking—bringing people together over meals—and he was endlessly fascinated by outer space, always looking toward the stars with curiosity and wonder.

But more than anything else, Alex’s greatest joy was his family. He married and became a proud father to his son, Banjo, who was the light of his life. Every moment Alex spent with Banjo was an adventure, full of laughter, imagination, and love.

Alex also found his soulmate in his fiancée, Kelly. Their love story began in an unexpected but fitting way—she met him while buying a car. From that moment on, Kelly became his partner, his confidante, and the love of his life.

Alex will be remembered not only for his intelligence, humor, and passions, but for the way he loved deeply and devoted himself fully to the people who meant the most to him.

Alex is preceded in death by his grandparents Maria Josefina Rodriguez, Maria Kidonakis and Gregory Kidonakis and his Uncle Alex Kidonakis. He leaves behind his son, Banjo Kidonakis, his mother, Thelma Kidonakis, his father, Constantinos Kidonakis, his sisters Melissa and Cimela Kidonakis, and his fiancé Grace Kelly Vasquez.

The viewing will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, 800 FM 1488, Hempstead, Texas 77445. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the same location.

In lieu of flowers, we kindly invite you to contribute to Banjo’s 529 college fund: tinyurl.com/yc5hk79j.
