Why is it called the Wolf Moon?
The Wolf Moon is named for the howling of wolves that was more frequently heard in January, particularly in North America by both Native American and colonial settlers.
During the winter, wolves were often heard howling due to hunger or when they roamed closer to human settlements in search of scarce food.
Cultural origin:
The name originated from the sounds of wolves heard during the harsh winter months. This practice of naming full moons after seasonal events or animal behavior was common among both Native American and early colonial Americans.
Reason for howling:
While it was once believed wolves howled at the moon, experts now know that their howls are a form of communication for a variety of reasons.
These include defining territory, locating pack members, reinforcing social bonds, and coordinating hunts.
Nocturnal animals like wolves are more active at night, and howling toward the sky helps carry their calls further.
Alternative names:
The "Wolf Moon" is also known by other names in different cultures. For example, the Algonquin called it "Squochee Kesos" or the "Moon of Life at its Height".
