In 2022, the su***de rate among veterans was 34.7 per 100,000, which is more than double the rate of 17.1 per 100,000 among non-veteran adults.
While veterans make up about 6% of the U.S. adult population, they accounted for nearly 14% of all adult su***des from 2017 to 2020.
For women, the age-adjusted su***de rate for veterans was 92% higher than for non-veteran women in 2022 (14.2 vs. 7.4 per 100,000).
For men, the age-adjusted su***de rate for veterans was 44% higher than for non-veteran men (42.7 vs. 29.6 per 100,000).
Studies have repeatedly shown that first responders, including police, firefighters, and EMS, are more likely to die by su***de than in the line of duty.
2023 study found that first responders accounted for 1% of all su***des. A significant percentage of first responder su***des occurred among law enforcement (58%), firefighters (21%), and EMS providers (18%).
