Can hormones impact your risk of dementia?
A major new study says yes.
Researchers followed over 300,000 people for 12 years and found that hormone levels—especially testosterone and SHBG—were linked to brain health.
Here’s what they found:
•Men with higher free testosterone had up to 37% lower risk of dementia
•Postmenopausal women with slightly higher testosterone also had a reduced risk
•But in both men and women, higher SHBG (a protein that binds hormones) was linked to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s and other dementias
Bottom line:
Balanced hormones play a role in protecting your brain as you age. It’s not the full picture—but it’s a piece we can’t ignore.
The crazy part is that a lot of doctors don’t even look at free testosterone when they’re giving you testosterone to actually monitor how much you’re getting and how much you should be getting! So make sure no matter where you’re getting your hormones that they’re testing you fully!
