Healing doesn’t always happen through words alone. 💛

At Little Dove, our Expressive Arts Therapy approach uses creativity, play, movement, art, music, and imagination to help children, teens, and adults process emotions and life experiences in meaningful ways. Through creating, clients can build emotional regulation, confidence, self-expression, and connection — all in a supportive therapeutic space.

Sometimes the path to healing starts with a paintbrush, a story, a song, or simply the freedom to create. Call or view our website to schedule a consultation with us!

Discovery plays a crucial role in a child's learning journey, serving as a cornerstone of their development and growth. When children are given the freedom to explore their surroundings and learn independently, it not only enhances their confidence but also fosters a sense of self-autonomy that is vital for their future endeavors. This process of exploration allows them to make sense of the world around them, encouraging curiosity and a love for learning that can last a lifetime.

However, it is important to remember that this newfound independence does not diminish the vital role you play as a parent. Your presence is indispensable in providing a safe and supportive environment—a sanctuary where your children can always return. By offering guidance, reassurance, and unconditional love, you help to create a balanced foundation for their explorations, ensuring they feel secure in their journey of discovery.

The Preoperational Stage is one of the most magical and misunderstood periods of childhood. Between ages 2 and 7, children begin thinking in symbols—words, images, and make-believe—but logical thinking hasn't developed yet.

This stage in Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development has two substages. Rather than being two completely separate phases, they blend into each other as your child's thinking gradually becomes more flexible and outward-facing.

Swipe through for a breakdown of both substages plus the four big concepts every parent should know: egocentrism, animism, centration, and lack of reversibility.

At Little Dove Counseling, we work with you and your child in making sense of these big concepts and strive towards strengthening your connection. To learn more or schedule a consultation, click the link in bio or visit www.littledovecounseling.com

A lot of parents are carrying more than they let on. It can show up as irritability, second-guessing your decisions, feeling disconnected from your child, or just a constant sense of pressure to “get it right.” Sometimes it’s not even clear what’s wrong—just that something feels harder than it should.

Parent therapy offers a space to sort through these things to understand what's underneath the stress, strengthen your relationship with your child, and find ways of responding that feel more aligned and sustainable.

At Little Dove Counseling, we work with parents navigating everything from big emotions and behavioral challenges to the quieter experiences—like loss of self, resentment, or burn out.

This work isn’t about becoming a “perfect” parent. It’s about feeling more grounded, more connected, and more like yourself in the role you’re in. If something has been feeling off or heavy lately, it might be worth having a space that’s just for you.

Pain isn’t the problem—it’s the signal.
When children have big emotions, it can feel overwhelming to know how to respond. Many parents find themselves wondering if they’re doing the “right” thing, or how to make it better.

But often, those moments aren’t something to fix right away.
They’re something to gently understand.

Underneath the behavior is a feeling, and underneath the feeling is a need—to feel safe, seen, and supported. When we begin to respond with curiosity and care, we help our children learn that their emotions are not too much… and that they don’t have to face them alone.

At Little Dove Counseling Center, we offer a safe, supportive space to help families make sense of big emotions and build tools that feel doable in everyday life.

As parents, we naturally respond to what stands out. Often, it’s the moments that need correcting, redirecting, or fixing.

That’s a natural part of parenting. You’re guiding, teaching, and supporting your child every day.
But over time, what we consistently notice and respond to can shape how our children begin to see themselves.

When positive moments are named—effort, kindness, persistence—kids start to internalize those messages:
“I’m capable.”
“I can keep trying.”
“I’m a kind person.”

This doesn’t mean ignoring mistakes or offering constant praise. Kids also benefit from honest, realistic feedback that helps them grow. It’s about balance—making sure the good doesn’t go unnoticed. Because the way we respond today often becomes the voice they carry tomorrow.

Being a middle schooler can feel like living in between—wanting more independence, while still needing support. Emotions grow bigger, friendships become more complex, and it’s not always easy to put those experiences into words. For parents, this stage can feel just as confusing—wondering how to stay connected while everything seems to be shifting.

Therapy creates space for both.

For teens, it’s a place to explore what they’re feeling, build confidence, and make sense of who they are becoming. For parents, it offers insight into their child’s inner world and guidance on how to respond with understanding.

At Little Dove, we support the developmental needs of adolescents through connection, creativity, and compassion—helping both teens and parents feel heard, understood, and more connected. Because when both sides feel seen, relationships can grow alongside the child.

Parenting can bring moments where everything feels loud, overwhelming, or uncertain.

In parent-child therapy, we often remind caregivers that their regulation helps guide the moment. A pause, a breath, or a small shift toward connection can change the tone of an interaction.

These reminders are meant for the moments in the middle of the storm. Save these for a hard day—you’re not alone in those moments.
