đź’™ When Arnulfo turned 50, a conversation with a family friend changed everything. He learned how important colonoscopies are, especially now that screenings are recommended starting at age 45 due to rising cancer rates in younger people.

At the time, Arnulfo didn’t know much about colonoscopies. But with a family history of re**al cancer, he decided not to wait and scheduled his screening. That decision made all the difference.

Doctors found two precancerous polyps, and during a follow-up exam three years later, they found two more. Because Arnulfo was proactive about getting screened, he was able to prevent cancer from developing.

Today, he’s grateful and passionate about sharing his story.

“Getting this [screening] literally saved my life,” Arnulfo says. And "the preparation was also far easier than I had imagined. Don’t put it off - get screened. Prevention is the best tool we have."

Now, Arnulfo is able to enjoy moments like this, out in the snow, embracing life and the outdoors with the people he loves.

Our ear, nose, and throat (ENT) team recently placed John Muir Health’s first implantable upper airway stimulation device, bringing a new treatment option to people living with sleep apnea.

This innovative device works inside the body to help keep the airway open, allowing patients to breathe regularly and sleep better.

We’re grateful to our skilled surgical team for helping expand advanced treatment options and improve quality of life for our patients.

❤️ New Episode: Living Heart Smart – Cardiology 101: Trifecta Testing ❤️

Taking care of your hear can feel overwhelming — especially when you hear terms like EKG, echo, or stress test. In this episode, Dr. Matt DeVane and Dr. Carolyn Lacey break it all down in a simple, reassuring way to help you better understand your heart and the essential tests we use to care for it.

From the “squiggly lines” of an EKG to the powerful images of an echocardiogram and the insights of a stress test, the doctors explain how these three noninvasive office tests work together - the “trifecta” - to give a complete picture of your heart’s rhythm, strength, valves, and blood flow.

If you’ve ever wondered what your results really mean or felt unsure about different heart tests, this episode is for you. 💙

If you’ve noticed shortness of breath, fatigue or heart palpitations, it could be mitral valve regurgitation, one of the most common heart valve conditions — and it can affect everyday life.

We’re among the first hospitals in the Bay Area to offer minimally invasive mini mitral valve repair surgery, performed through a small incision, avoiding traditional open-heart surgery and many of the long-term effects of valve replacement.

It’s Heart Month — a time to pause and think about the health of your own heart. ❤️

David’s story is a powerful reminder that some heart conditions don’t come with warning signs. That’s why regular checkups matter — even when you feel completely fine.

This month, we encourage you to take a simple but important step: schedule your routine exam, ask questions, and stay proactive about your heart health. Early detection can make all the difference.

Your heart works hard for you every day. Make sure you’re taking care of it, too.

We are honored to share Don’s story — a patient whose strength of heart goes far beyond the operating room. ❤️

Don faced a high-risk undertaking few would willingly choose: a second open-heart surgery and a valve replacement.
With determination and an unwavering goal in mind, Don committed to the journey ahead. He recovered for three weeks between procedures, preparing himself physically and mentally for the second surgery. Following the two surgeries, Don focused on healing again, with one very important milestone in sight - a fishing trip he absolutely did not want to miss.

True to form, Don made it on that fishing trip.

His story is a powerful reminder that heart health is about resilience, partnership, and the will to keep doing the things you love.

This Heart Month, we celebrate patients like Don, whose courage inspires us every day.
