March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Today we Dress in Blue to support patients, survivors, and families affected by colorectal cancer.

We’re proud of our colorectal post-surgical team who care for patients every day with skill, compassion, and heart. 💙

Colorectal cancer is rising in people under age 50, which makes early screening more important than ever. Screening can help find cancer early, when it is easier to treat.

Together, we raise awareness and encourage our community to get screened. Early detection can save lives.

❤️ New Episode: Living Heart Smart – Cardiology 101: Trifecta Testing ❤️

Taking care of your hear can feel overwhelming — especially when you hear terms like EKG, echo, or stress test. In this episode, Dr. Matt DeVane and Dr. Carolyn Lacey break it all down in a simple, reassuring way to help you better understand your heart and the essential tests we use to care for it.

From the “squiggly lines” of an EKG to the powerful images of an echocardiogram and the insights of a stress test, the doctors explain how these three noninvasive office tests work together - the “trifecta” - to give a complete picture of your heart’s rhythm, strength, valves, and blood flow.

If you’ve ever wondered what your results really mean or felt unsure about different heart tests, this episode is for you. 💙

If you’ve noticed shortness of breath, fatigue or heart palpitations, it could be mitral valve regurgitation, one of the most common heart valve conditions — and it can affect everyday life.

We’re among the first hospitals in the Bay Area to offer minimally invasive mini mitral valve repair surgery, performed through a small incision, avoiding traditional open-heart surgery and many of the long-term effects of valve replacement.

It’s Heart Month — a time to pause and think about the health of your own heart. ❤️

David’s story is a powerful reminder that some heart conditions don’t come with warning signs. That’s why regular checkups matter — even when you feel completely fine.

This month, we encourage you to take a simple but important step: schedule your routine exam, ask questions, and stay proactive about your heart health. Early detection can make all the difference.

Your heart works hard for you every day. Make sure you’re taking care of it, too.

We are honored to share Don’s story — a patient whose strength of heart goes far beyond the operating room. ❤️

Don faced a high-risk undertaking few would willingly choose: a second open-heart surgery and a valve replacement.
With determination and an unwavering goal in mind, Don committed to the journey ahead. He recovered for three weeks between procedures, preparing himself physically and mentally for the second surgery. Following the two surgeries, Don focused on healing again, with one very important milestone in sight - a fishing trip he absolutely did not want to miss.

True to form, Don made it on that fishing trip.

His story is a powerful reminder that heart health is about resilience, partnership, and the will to keep doing the things you love.

This Heart Month, we celebrate patients like Don, whose courage inspires us every day.

Important safety alert from our Trauma Center team:
Our Trauma Center team observed double the number of serious injuries involving e-bikes and e-scooters in 2025 as the previous year. As a Trauma Center, we are committed to injury prevention by providing information to help people of all ages make smarter and safer decisions.

E-bikes and scooters are faster and heavier than traditional bikes and scooters, and they can take time and experience to handle safely. With faster speeds comes more severe collisions and the likelihood of serious or fatal injuries. The types of injuries we are seeing are much closer to those often associated with motorcycle accidents than to those on non-motorized bicycles. The risks can be especially worrisome when teens and children are involved.

For those operating bikes and scooters, remember these safety precautions to keep you and others safe:
✔ Wear a helmet every ride – one that reflects the type of e-bike or e-scooter you’re riding
✔ Follow local traffic laws, travel at a safe speed and know where you are allowed to ride, depending on the type and class (1-3) of bike or scooter
✔ Yield to pedestrians
✔ Use lights and reflectors to increase your visibility to drivers

Parents may want to keep in mind that the American Academy of Pediatrics advises against children under 16 operating e-bikes or e-scooters because of the safety risks related to speed and weight. By law, children under 16 may not operate a Class 3 e-bike.

E-bikes and e-scooters can be part of a healthier, more active community when safety comes first.

Our team celebrates a truly extraordinary achievement with John Muir Health Concord Medical Center being awarded Magnet® recognition for the FOURTH consecutive time!

Magnet is the highest honor a hospital can receive for nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. Achieving this distinction once is remarkable. Earning it four times places our nursing team among an elite group nationwide.

While visiting Concord, Magnet appraisers observed what makes our teams high performing:
• Nurses are trusted leaders at John Muir Health engaged in strong, interdisciplinary collaboration.
• A close-knit, supportive environment, where nurses choose to stay -- the average tenure of our nurses is 10.5 years!
• Teams take pride in providing safe, compassionate, high-quality care in a respectful and supportive culture.

This achievement means both our Concord and Walnut Creek hospitals hold Magnet designation, a recognition shared by only about 10% of hospitals nationally.

To our nurses, clinical partners, physicians, support teams and volunteers: thank you for your unwavering dedication to excellence. You make exceptional care possible every day.
