A little personal history: my Lola and Tito had a short lived Filipino American restaurant (turo turo) in Los Angeles. My Tito said it was located off Beverly Street in downtown (AKA Hi-Fi) and had a pretty decent following. I never got to try it since it closed before I arrived in the US (in ‘87).

My Lola’s cooking is still the best food I’ve ever had, hands down. Everything she made whether it was Filipino, American, Chinese…she made with flavor and love. I remember growing up and just watching her cook. It felt like she’d spend all day in the kitchen planning out the menu for the family. No measurements, no problem. Always the last to eat, wanting to absorb all the oohs and ahhs from everyone taking a bite of the food she prepared. It was in these moments that I would catch her at ease. Feeling life a bit softer.

Whenever I’d ask her about the restaurant, it felt bittersweet. The amount of pride she had behind it and the sadness felt realizing it was a dream long gone. During , I hope you eat some of your favorite 🇵🇭 food and/or support a local Fil-Am eatery in memory of my Lola and all our ancestors who fed us along the way 🥲🥰🫶🏽✨

It’s been two years since I started ! We are constantly reminded of what we lack so I wanted to take the time to capture this moment. It takes a village and for this, I want to thank you for your support and appreciation. I don’t know what the future holds, but I sure am excited for the road ahead. Cheers to the unknown 🥂!

The older I get, the more I realize how much I don’t know. And that’s okay. Given the fact that there are many people not afforded the opportunity to act young and stupid, I do want to highlight the mindset that comes with growing older. The acceptance of it all. The letting go of what you can’t control. When you get to the other side, I promise it’ll be worthwhile.

Also, hello again. I’m dropping by periodically. I still lurk and am around if you need me. Wishing you a cautiously optimistic new year 💗.

One of my former clients in recovery shared this with me and I remind myself often. When times feel like you have no control over your life, I encourage you to take a step back, drop your shoulders, breathe, and practice saying this with me.

This past weekend, I was able to make a trip to the central coast of California with my friends and fellow social workers. As fate would have it, we stayed in Morro Bay which is the site of the landing of the first Filipinos on this very day in 1587. That’s right, October 18, 1587. Over 30 years before the pilgrims landed in Plymouth Rock. I didn’t know about this until earlier this year. It’s a shame that this history is not typically learned throughout the K-12 educational experience. This is why it’s important that we celebrate and remember that we are a part of the fabric and foundation of American history.

Vulnerability can be a difficult concept for many Filipinx. One of the lauded cornerstones of our culture is sacrifice. Ignore your feelings. Don’t make a scene. Magtiis ka muna. Magsakripisyo. Familiar terms that shape our relationship with asking for and accepting help. What has been your relationship with asking for help?
