The autoimmune disorder—Wegener’s Disease—rarely affects the eyes, but unfortunately, Fred was that one in a million case. In October 2015, a burst capillary first brought him to his eye doctor, and over the next few months, his vision continued to deteriorate as doctors worked to find out what was wrong and stop his vision loss.

Fred suffered from extreme conjunctivitis, as the disease attacked the thin lining of his eyes, resulting in an 80% deterioration of the eye structure in one of his eyes and causing redness, pain, and extreme light sensitivity. In a matter of months, Fred went from 20/20 vision to effective blindness—he could walk around a room and discern shapes but had very little clarity.

As doctors worked to control the progression of his disease, his medicines redirected the flow of vitreous fluid within his eye, drawing nutrients away from his corneas and rebuilding new capillaries and vessels, which further impaired his corneas. Fred’s corneas were now essentially melting, and his only chance at seeing again meant a cornea transplant in both eyes.

In November and December of 2017, Fred underwent cornea transplant surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, receiving new corneas from two anonymous donors—people who said “Yes” to cornea donation at their passing.

As Fred puts it, their donations to him gave “Life to his Life. Their gift is so much more than a gift; it has allowed my life to go forward with only an interruption, not an end. I will not be blind! I have come out the other end of my ordeal because someone cared, and I’m so very grateful.”

Now Fred is an active volunteer with NEDS and shares his story at many NEDS events and in the NEDS office in Waltham!

Thank you CorneaGen for sharing this story!

Mark Bastoni received a liver transplant in November 2024. Now he is writing a book about his experiences.

“One summer morning, I was having flu fatigue… that run-down feeling. When I nearly collapsed, I knew I had an emergency. My son drove me to the Emergency Room. I had lost a lot of blood internally, yet an endoscopy found no source. But he did find varices indicating cirrhosis, the non-alcoholic variety. But my condition couldn’t be controlled. I had a fall, an ambulance ride, and spent three months in hospital beds.”

“Many years ago, I was Public Information Director at the Mass Registry of Motor Vehicles. ‘Renew a license, renew a life’ was one of the priorities, and the opportunity to register was formalized into law much later. I penned many a press release in support, and I became an unlimited donor myself. I later signed up for marrow donation at the Head of the Charles Regatta. So going on the ‘giving’ side was a snap. I never imagined I’d be on the ‘getting’ side of that equation.”

“I haven’t met my donor family, though I have expressed my gratitude. I told of a very real dream shortly after the surgery effects wore off. I felt I had shaken hands with their loved one. I expressed my sympathies and promised to be worthy of their generosity and pain. Their loved one lives on within me. It took some getting used to that, but it is a good feeling.”

“Being a donor is not only a chance to save another life, it’s a chance for you to live on, as my donor lives on within me. And who is to say those cells can’t sense and celebrate that they have survived? Life’s mysteries abound. And there is no downside to being a donor. Worst case: it will not make any difference to you at all, or you won’t qualify as a donor, anyway, designated or not. Better case: some of you lives on and saves a life.”

“A nurse mentioned to me that there are stories of recipients acquiring their donor’s traits. Perhaps if I learn more about my donor, I, too, will recognize something. I am vigilant. And I can do so only because someone showed the courage and compassion to offer themselves as an organ donor. I wish we all understood how profoundly simple but meaningful that can be.”

Thank you Mark for sharing your story.

Amy Peterson and family held their 3rd Annual Tap’s Ride on September 21st in Marlborough. Amy and her family/friends host this ride in memory of Amy's husband Tim, who was a donor when he passed.

“For so many people, organ donation is a second chance – a second chance at life, a second chance to do activities you thought you would never be able to do again, a second chance to feel whole again after a devastating illness or accident. Second chances are exactly what our family was built on. A second chance at love with a second marriage, a second mom, and a second dad. All those seconds were what made making the decision to donate so easy. To give others that second chance and allow someone we love with all our hearts a second chance to live as a part of others and enrich their lives beyond.”

“And what helps us feel so secure in our decision is the kindness, care, and thoughtful communication by NEDS both at the time of our decision and through the Aftercare team. A team that helps to keep us connected in small yet so many meaningful ways to donors and their families. Getting an update from a recipient, even though the update can bring tears to our eyes, also brings us comfort, hearing the wonderful ways some of the recipients have been able to thrive.”

“The ride we have done now for 3 years to benefit NEDS has been a way for our family to give back and support such a wonderful organization that brought us hope at a time when we didn’t have much. Hope for other families. We are honored to have a part in spreading awareness and raising money to continue NEDS' mission.” This year Amy and her family raised $5,000!

Thank you, Amy and family, for all you do to support donation and honor Tim's legacy.

Robin Lewis was enjoying life as a successful executive when she received shocking news. Her aunt called, saying she had found a lump and was diagnosed with breast cancer. This alarmed Robin because cancer runs in their family. Her mother had breast cancer, and her grandmother also died at an early age from the disease.

“Robin, I never miss a mammogram. I just happened to have been doing a self-exam and felt it,” her Aunt Terri said. The wheels of concern began churning in Robin’s head. Later that evening, Robin did a self-exam. To her surprise, Robin also felt a lump. She immediately made an appointment with her physician, who referred her for imaging. While Robin was dressing after her mammogram, the nurse said, “Don’t get dressed. The doctor wants to examine you right now.” After scoping both breasts, the doctor revealed he was 99% sure there was cancer on both sides.

Although a biopsy later confirmed cancer, the surgeon said these reassuring words, “Yes, you have cancer, but you don’t need to get your affairs in order!” Robin breathed a sigh of relief. Her thoughts immediately shifted from surviving to thriving.

Because of Robin’s past experience working in donation and transplantation, she has a special appreciation of the impact donated tissue makes in the lives of recipients, and is especially grateful to receive the gift of life. “I feel younger and more vibrant, so I’d tell my donor thank you for making my life better,” she reminisced. “Because I caught it early, I was able to avoid chemo,” she exclaimed.

"I’m grateful to my donor families for their generous gift of skin that helped me heal after a bilateral mastectomy. It allowed me to get back to a sense of normalcy and enjoy special moments with my family."

Today, Robin enjoys a life doing what she loves best—spending time with her husband, son, daughter, grandkids, and her European Golden Retriever.

Thank you, MTF Biologics, for sharing this story!
