Joining the event were Lowell's Director of Health and Human Services Lisa Golden, State Representative Vanna Howard, State Rep. Tara Hong, and Massachusetts Department of Public Health officials to celebrate the gift of organ donation this holiday season.

NEDS volunteer Ed Boynton shared his story as a heart recipient who received a transplant in 2024. NEDS volunteer Linda Campbell also shared about her husband, Richard, who passed away in 2020, and generously donated his bone, tendon, and tissue in the hope of helping someone in need.

Thank you to the City of Lowell, MA - Government for your support of NEDS’ donation mission!

Linda Campbell’s husband, Richard Campbell, became a tissue donor five years ago today on December 9th 2020 after he died from a cardiac event. Now Linda shares Richard’s story to encourage others to register their decision to be a donor.

“Richard was a polio survivor. He was left with limited mobility in his left leg and lung and spine weakness. He always had a positive attitude, bordering on fanatical, when he was told he couldn’t or shouldn’t do something physical. He would go to the extreme to prove that wrong – weight training, riding a bicycle ten miles to work, playing basketball, racquetball, softball, and, always, golf. Golf was his passion.”

“Richard began to show signs of post-polio syndrome about 20 years ago. He had some leg and back surgeries, and the mobility and stamina he had worked so hard to develop and maintain began to decrease. We lived at that time on a golf course in the White Mountains. The course sponsored an adaptive golf program for people with disabilities. He planned to become a volunteer in that program to work with those players, demonstrating how to modify their play to accommodate their limitations, as he had been doing all his life.”

“Richard retired in December 2020 and had a massive cardiac event and died the next morning. He never got to work with other people with physical limitations in the way he had actively planned to do. Due to the severity of his coronary event, he was not able to donate solid organs but was able to donate his corneas, muscle, tendons, bone, and other soft tissue. As it turns out, these are the very things that will help people with mobility limitations.”

“About 18 months after his donation, I received a letter from a young woman who had a badly damaged shoulder that severely limited her use of that arm. She received muscle from Richard that restored her mobility. She wrote that she was expecting her first nephew soon and that when she holds him for the first time, she would be thinking of Richard and how his gift made that possible.”

Thank you, Linda, for sharing Richard's story.

"A donor family gave me a second chance at life in September 2021. Their gift let me come home from a medically induced coma and hold my newborn son, Kwame, when we weren’t sure I’d ever meet him. I’m a husband and father, and every school drop-off, bedtime story, and quiet walk is possible because someone said 'yes.'"

Throughout 2025, thousands of supporters helped contribute to New England Donor Services' mission to save and heal lives. Today, you have the power to help others in need of the gift of life and healing. Your generous financial contribution will help to bring more vital awareness to the mission to save and heal lives. It will encourage more people to say YES. Every YES to organ and tissue donation is an offer of hope to someone waiting for a second chance.

Right now, thousands are waiting for the gift of life—and every day, families in our community face unimaginable tragedy. In the midst of their grief, donor families, like Jaxon’s mom and dad, provide hope and healing to others through organ and tissue donation.

In 2015, shortly after graduating from college, Olivia was diagnosed with heart failure and was told that she would need a heart transplant. Today, Olivia shares her story to encourage others to register their decision to be a donor.

“Shortly after graduating from college, I began experiencing fatigue, shortness of breath, and pain with eating or exertion. Despite always being active, I was struggling to workout and didn’t feel myself. I was urged to go to the hospital by my employer and learned I was in heart failure. Within days, I was told I needed a heart transplant, and by the end of that week, I had an LVAD, my “Chad the VAD”, implanted to keep me alive.”

“The device allowed me to regain strength, return to work, and wait for my transplant. After one “dry run” in November 2016, I received my real call while living on Martha’s Vineyard. I caught the last ferry of the night to the mainland and received my heart transplant on December 1, 2016.”

“As my physical health improved, I struggled with the emotional weight of receiving someone else’s heart. After years of wondering, I was finally connected with my donor’s family in January 2025. I learned that my donor was a 23-year-old woman named Nora, who was kind, intelligent, compassionate, and deeply devoted to children and animals. She also struggled with addiction, and her passing is the reason I am alive today. Through email, I was able to connect with both of her parents, and I am forever grateful for the conversations we shared. ”

“After recovering, I felt compelled to give back to the community that had supported me. I earned my EMT certification, worked for two island EMS services, and fell in love with emergency medicine. That passion led me to become a volunteer firefighter and, eventually, a nationally certified paramedic. I’ve also remained involved with New England Donor Services and the American Heart Association, sharing my story and supporting their work. I have returned home to Martha’s Vineyard and was recently accepted to a nursing program. I can’t wait to take Nora with me on this next chapter. Everything I do, I do with and for her.”

Thank you, Olivia, for sharing your story!
