Meet the 2021 Benefit Auction Speaker: Lauren Jacobs-Lazer

My name is Lauren. I have spent most of my life in New Jersey. I am married and have 3 kids- Benjamin (9), Hannah (9) and Noah (3). I am a licensed clinical social worker and worked for many years in healthcare before deciding to stay home with my children for a while.

I was diagnosed with chronic idiopathic uveitis when I was 11 years old. I had specialists in the New York area, was seen at NIH, and have even seen Dr. Foster! I had a challenging case of uveitis for many years and tried many different medications and combinations of medications to keep everything under control. It proved difficult at times.

About 10 years ago things seemed to calm down. We don't know if the uveitis "burned itself out" after 20 years or if a new medication I started got me back into the groove!
I founded the Walk for Vision NJ in 2007 after learning about the success of the walk in Boston. We wanted something in the tri-state area for people to participate in. We've had 11 walks since then and over 200 people participate annually. Patients with uveitis come and bring their support networks and we have a great time! We spread awareness of uveitis and offer support to one another. We have a wide range of people with uveitis attend but the walk is particularly helpful for parents of younger children- they get to meet other parents and learn what the best resources/treatments are from each other. We hope to resume our Walk for Vision NJ in 2022!

Uveitis is a challenging disease to manage so it's important to find the right ophthalmologist to take care of you. If you don't live near a uveitis specialist they can sometimes consult with your local ophthalmologist regarding your treatment. The key to maintaining vision is good control of inflammation. Get involved with support groups and other networks so you can gather information, make new friends, and know that you are not the only one to go through this challenging disease.
I am looking forward to seeing you on November 6th at the Foundation’s Virtual Auction Benefit and future walks!

We are thrilled to report that our book, Advances in the Diagnosis and Management of Uveitis has been downloaded over 5,000 times. Congratulations to Dr. Foster and Dr. Rodriguez-Garcia on this accomplishment! 🎉

This achievement demonstrates the reach and usage of the publication - more than 5000 researchers worldwide read, downloaded and interacted with the content and the research clearly has influence within the scientific community. Researchers around the world have also been able to connect with this research to further develop their own projects.
