📌Join us next week for our March virtual support group!

“Let's Talk About It: OID & Systemic Illness”
Uveitis is often connected to more than the eyes, up to 30–50% of cases are associated with an underlying systemic autoimmune or inflammatory disease, including rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, sarcoidosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and spondyloarthritis.

Managing both ocular inflammation and systemic illness can feel isolating, but you don’t have to do it alone. Join us to connect, share, and learn with others who truly understand.

Rare ocular inflammatory diseases may be uncommon, but the strength of this community is not.
On this Rare Disease Day, we honor every story shared, every setback endured, and every moment of hope that keeps us moving forward.
Behind every diagnosis is a person, a family, and a community determined to be seen, heard, and supported.
Today, we amplify their voices.
Today, we stand together.
Today, we choose hope.

to a former fellow reunion from 2024 with nearly the entire Class of 2011 together again. It’s incredible to see how each of these graduates has gone on to advance the field and provide expert care to patients living with rare ocular inflammatory diseases.

Meet Katherine, one of the incredible individuals in our community, who will be sharing her story & advice at our next support group! ✨

"I’m an IT software trainer with a focus on making technology understandable and accessible to everyone. The same skills I use to plan a complex implementation at work, like an eye for spreadsheets and templates, have helped me advocate for myself and better manage my uveitis. In my free time, I enjoy drinking matcha, reading, visiting museums, and making a variety of things with my hands. I call St. Louis home, where you might also find me volunteering with Mightiest Mamas, the non-profit I co-founded to bring smiles to our local hospital.

While managing uveitis can feel daunting, but you don’t have to do it alone—or reinvent the wheel. I’ll walk through the systems I’ve built over years of trial and error, including tips for preparing for appointments, tracking flares, and specialty medication reminders. Come ready to pick up new ideas you can adapt for your own care."

We’re grateful to start 2026 by learning and sharing alongside the uveitis community. This past weekend, members of the OIUF research team attended the American Uveitis Society Winter Symposium. Our research fellow, Dr. Andrew Briere, presented a case of placoid chorioretinitis, and Dr. Lingling Huang presented work exploring how AI may help predict prognosis in Birdshot Chorioretinopathy, an ongoing project in partnership with OIUF and MERSI.

Humira became the first FDA-approved non-steroid option for non-infectious uveitis in 2016, and in 2026, it remains the only one.

That’s why OIUF partners with the experts working toward new FDA-approved therapies, while also conducting research on off-label treatments and providing patient support and education so no one has to navigate access and insurance barriers alone.
