Trauma is anything that overwhelms your nervous system -- in that moment, and it can have a lot to do with how young you were as well as your environment or state of mind at the time

Therapists are here to listen and be by your side as you work through it. It's what we do. Please don't hesitate to call on us

This is one of my favorite little books right now, and I love having the chance to hear the author read it out loud.

It was obviously inspired by coronavirus, but it never mentions coronavirus. It just gives you a very effective way to calm yourself when things go wrong.

It's just over 4 minutes long, so hopefully you can find time to give it a listen!

Here's a great article that talks about the impact of screen time on young people's attention, learning, social skills, sleep. The author also includes a handy chart with guidelines based on age.

I have a lot to say on this subject and will very likely post more in the future, but this is a good starting point.

For those who feel too overwhelmed or rushed to read the whole article, here are 5 main points:

1. Co-watch whenever possible
2. Choose media wisely.
3. Keep bedtime, mealtime, and family time screen-free.
4. Limit your own phone use.
5. Emphasize the big three: sleep, healthy nutrition, and exercise.

Dr. Jennifer Cross, developmental and behavioral pediatrics expert, explains the harmful effects of too much screen time on early childhood development.

GRETA, the "almost" therapy dog, having a happy moment in the Florida sunshine

Some of you know GRETA, and some of you don't. For those of you who don't know her story, GRETA is a highly trained girl, who breezed through certification to be a Therapy Dog several years ago. Unfortunately, she "failed" in the real world due to her own anxiety, hence the "almost" in her title.

For those of you who know and love GRETA, I wanted to let you know that she recently was able to connect with her very own Veterinary Behaviorist (like a psychiatrist for dogs) and is currently taking medication to help reduce her anxiety. She is doing really well on a combination of Clonidine and Zoloft!

GRETA loves Telehealth, as she can be as involved (or not) as she chooses to be in the moment. She mainly helps children and teens realize that it is OKAY if you need medication to help you feel happy and calm and to be the very best version of yourself! We all know that she is loveable and good -- and deserves to feel happy -- and so do you!

Such a simple message. I love it!

We are living in stressful times, there is no doubt about that! But there are things we can do to give ourselves and our family members just a little boost to get us through!

I found this neat article that has many great ideas about managing stress through a pandemic.

If you feel like you don't have enough energy to read an entire article (and that's okay), here's a bulleted list of the main points. You can scan the list and pick the one you think you are lacking the most and go from there!

* Do virtual meetups or playdates
* Make “me” time.
* Give yourself (and your kids) some slack.
* Go outside when possible.
* Limit your time on social media and watching the news.
* Check in with yourself and your partner about how you’re handling the stress as a parent.
* Keep your routine (as much as possible).
* Plan activities to pass the time.

Let me know if you tried any of these today. As for Greta and myself, we're going to go play some frisbee outside! It's a gorgeous day here in Jensen Beach!

Social distancing because of Coronavirus (COVID-19) is the best thing we can do right now to decrease the risk of spreading the virus in our communities. But social distancing and self-isolation can be really stressful.
