Met Steven and Henry! These two men get up in the middle of the night, on weekends, holidays, in good weather and bad, helping the people of our town on the Wanaque First Aid Squad.

On the left is Steven Dykhouse, a member since 2021. Steven works as Security officer at Christian Health Center, is a Special Police Officer for the Borough of Wanaque, and he is in college for Radiography. Steven has always had a passion to help people, whether it’s using direct pressure on a wound or
just talking to them. He said the best part of being on the Squad is “hearing everyone’s story on what they did, what they do, and learning from their experience.” Steve is very proud to have been named EMT of the year, and has helped many residents From the Borough, especially the 2 people he helped save their lives with CPR.

Henry is a Program Manager at ICF. He has served proudly since 2022 and also has 2 CPR saves, not to mention the countless other calls to be very proud of. He says that the best part of being on the Squad is “the other people on the Squad and the service provided to the community”. Henry is the Squad’s Treasurer, and does an
excellent job keeping track of every penny donated to us to purchase new ambulances. Any Monday night you find the need for an ambulance you will usually find Henry & his crew
there to assist you. In his personal life you can find he and his wife living in Brookside Heights, and you can sometimes catch him serving as a Lector at Saint Francis of Assisi. Because of Henry’s dedication to help others, just this year he was chosen to receive the Knights of Columbus Award for Outstanding Member of the Wanaque First Aid Squad.

There is an upcoming EMT class coming in the early Fall at our building. We would love for anyone 16 and up to join us help us.
If at all interested come by the building on Melrose Ave. or Facebook IM us. We would really like to share a very rewarding experience with you!

This month we are featuring some of the Wednesday night crew, Kellie Affinito and Fred Ackerly. Both of these exceptional people have served the residents of Wanaque as members of our Squad for 7 years. Kellie is a second-generation member, as both her father and mother were members. In the “real world” Kellie manages the bakery department in the Acme in Saddlebrook. She found herself wanting to join our Squad when her sister passed out at home, and she caught her falling. Once she saw her Dad jump into action, she said to herself, “ This is what I want to do!”. She loves helping people and knows that it makes a difference... and always has a smile on her beautiful face. Kellie has received a 5-year award for service to our Squad and has 1 CPR save! Most times (just not this time) whenever you read something on Facebook, Kellie is the one who puts it out there for all to see and be aware of. She does a great job in the publicity department for the all the members of our Squad. Thanks Kellie!

Fred Ackerly has been a 2nd lieutenant, 1st lieutenant and is currently serving as Captain of our Squad. He is a Network Technician for Verizon, as well as being very involved with boy scouting. He became interested in the Squad and wanted to learn more about advanced medical training. He has always enjoyed volunteering and helping the community in many ways and wanted to set a good example for his two sons. Fred is a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Church and has received the Knights of Columbus award for Emergency Medical Technician of the Year, and as a former U.S. Marine, has also received the VFW EMT of the Year award as well... not to mention that he has 1 CPR save and is a CPR Instructor.

It’s because of people like Kellie and Fred that helps the Borough of Wanaque be a safer place to live and visit. Thank you both for being a great example to the youth of our town and helping out. Anyone interested in joining our Squad please respond to this posting and someone will get back to you! Please think seriously about making a difference. Help us, help you!

Happy March everyone! It’s Friday and this Wanaque 1st Aid Squad Crew is ready to serve! These three very dedicated and caring people serve the citizens of Wanaque every Friday night. On the right is a one-year member, Greg Concepcion. In the real-world Greg is an Engineer. He became interested in serving the community with his wife Paula, who is also a member. He’s always there lending a hand whenever, and to whomever, needs his help. In the center is Linda Van Der Veen. Linda is an EMT who is also a nurse. She has been an EMT for years and knew our Squad needed members, so for the past 11 months she has been going on calls above and beyond just Friday nights. Linda is also on our Training Committee, assisting others on becoming a member. On the left is Brandon Hicks. Brandon has been on the Squad for a year and a half. Brandon is an accountant/auditor and a former 20 year fireman of the Liverpool, NY and Sandy Creek, NY fire departments. It is his deep passion for EMS and to help others when they need it most that brought him to the WFAS. He says that the best part of being part of a lifesaving organization is knowing that your actions directly impart the well being of others. His sense of fulfillment and purpose that comes from helping people during their most critical moments is unmatched. I know I don’t want or need an ambulance to come and help me, but if I did, I’d be happy with these 3 wonderful people there to help me. If you or someone you know is interested in joining our Squad please feel free to contact me via Facebook.

This month’s featured member, or should I say members, come from a family that likes to help their friends and fellow residents when the need arises.

Carol Stelling has been a member for the past 7 years and pulls duty every Thursday night with her Dad, Bob. In her work life Carol works as a BDC Agent at Route 23 Nissan. Her Dad got her interested in joining and giving back to the community. In her “spare time” Carol enjoys the sport of fencing and being with family and friends.

Bob, Carol’s Dad is also a 7 year member. His professional life, as a respiratory therapist, can comes in handy as a Squad member. He became involved with Wanaque FAS when several other members of the Squad encouraged him to join.

They both feel that knowing you can make a difference in someone else’s life in a time of need is so very, very satisfying and having the knowledge to help is extremely important for everyone. Please, if you are at all interested in joining our Squad and making a difference contact us sending a text via this posting. CPR classes and standard first aid classes are coming up soon for prospective members of our community that wishes to join our life saving organization.

Thank you Bob and Carol for helping us help others!

Just wanted to start the New Year with our thanks to 3 of the GREAT young people that are on the Wanaque First Aid Squad. On the left is Amanda Jeffery, a second-year member of our Squad. Amanda pulls on Tuesday evening from 6pm to 5 am. Amanda became interested in joining our life saving family when she saw a few of her friends were already on the Squad. Now she says the best part of being a member is helping others when they are in need, and Amanda is always willing and able to help those who need help.

The second part of this team is Divine Crilly. Divine is an old-timer. He came on as a youth squad member while still in Lakeland HS. Divine is now a college student and a member if the NJ Army National Guard. He joined the squad during the COVID-19 Pandemic, a time when we really needed people to help one another, and he has done that exactly for 5 years now.

Last, but not at all least, is Kaitlyn DeLaro, who recently was elected and accepted the bars and responsibility of being the Lieutenant of our Squad who is in charge of scheduling... not an easy job in any way! She is a 3rd year member who joined when she saw her grandmother being helped by EMS and saw the way to help those who need medical assistance.

Not long ago, these 3 people found themselves on duty together, and although we do not discuss the specific details, together they performed life-saving CPR on an accident victim, transported the victim to the hospital and aided in saving the person’s life!

These 3 are only a few of the 25 people who go above and beyond their training to help others. If you are at all interested in joining our Squad, please feel free to contact us by sending a text (IM) to this posting. Someone will get back to you soon!
