Measles is a very contagious disease caused by a virus. It can be dangerous, especially for babies and young children.
Measles spreads through the air when a sick person coughs or sneezes. The virus can stay in the air for 2 hours after a person with measles leaves the space. It is so contagious that about 9 out of 10 people who come near a person with measles and are not protected by vaccination will also become infected.
The best way to protect against measles is with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. It’s never too late to get vaccinated. Vaccination helps protect you, the people around you, and our community. If you are not vaccinated, consider staying at home or away from crowded areas until measles cases in the area decrease, especially to protect people in your family that could get very sick.
Symptoms include high fever, (may spike to 104 degrees F.) cough, runny nose, red and/or watery eyes, or rash (break out 3-5 days after symptoms begin).
• If a patient needs to know their MMR status or their child's MMR status. They can call the PHN communicable disease line at 605-867-3300, available Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (excluding holidays).
If you think that you or someone in your family have measles, quarantine from others and call a healthcare provider, urgent care, or emergency room. You can call one of the numbers below and ask for guidance on your next steps.
• Pine Ridge Outpatient Department: 605-867-3184, Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and on Sundays and most holidays from 12 PM to 5 PM.

• Pine Ridge Emergency Department: 605-867-3339. 24 hours 7 days a week. Please try to utilize the Health Centers, Outpatient department, and Pediatric department numbers before calling them during working hours.
All individuals should consult with their health care providers to understand their options to get the MMR vaccine. CDC has recently updated their recommendation supporting administration of vitamin A under the supervision of a physician for those with mild, moderate, and severe infection. Studies have found that vitamin A can dramatically reduce measles mortality.
