More than half of all Americans above the age of 80 have cataracts or have had surgery to remove cataracts according to the National Eye Institute. The Mayo Clinic has the following recommendations to help prevent or slow down the growth of cataracts.

1. Routine eye exams.
2. Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
3. Manage other health related problems such as diabetes.
4. Don’t smoke.
5. Reduce alcohol intake.
6. Choose a healthier diet that consists of fruits and vegetables.
