DAY OF THE DEAD // so fitting for this story

You guys, read this story of how thieves came about. It's truly unreal.

In the town of Marseilles, there were four thieves. It was during the time of the bubonic plague and everyone was getting sick. But *not* the thieves.

They covered themselves in this homemade “vinegar” for protection from the dead bodies affected by the plague as they robbed them!

This “vinegar” was noted in a number of famous medical books published later on, including the Pharmacologia from 1825. As the legend goes, the thieves were a mix of spicer’s, perfumers, and embalmers, who had carried this recipe through their families for generations.

The magistrate eventually caught up with the thieves and was going to behead them, but he offered them amnesty instead if they explained how they used the thieves mix and what their recipe was.

D. Gary Young, the founder of Young Living, is most responsible for this story reaching the legendary status it has today. He created the thieves blend in 1984 for immune support, as a result of his study at the Warwick University in London.

Gary said, “I must tell you that I have read 17 different versions of the story. Some claim that there were four thieves, and some claim that there is many as 40. Most of the legends took place in the 15th century, but some put the date in the 18th century. The formulas vary from one story to the next; but through my research, I was led to four key botanicals that were mentioned again and again – clove, cinnamon, rosemary, and lemon- four of the same ingredients that make up the thieves oil blend today.”
