It's Not Too Late to Maximize Your Insurance Benefits Before The Year Ends!!

If you have dental treatment that you have put on hold, now is a great time to schedule an appointment to get the work done to maximize your insurance benefits before the end of the year. If you have not used the limit of the funds, this money does not accrue into next year. If you have major work to be done, consider taking advantage of the remaining balance.

Please note: For many people, the yearly limit is not always enough for all the dental work you may need, and it will need to be spread over several years.

For more information, call Mid Hudson Dental at (845) 462-1118. We're happy to help!

They say the mouth is the window to the body. All sorts of health concerns exhibit symptoms in the mouth: diabetes and celiac disease to name two.

You may wonder then, if certain diseases can be detected in our mouth, is it also possible to prevent certain illnesses by taking better care of our teeth? Researchers think so, and they’re hard at work trying to find out which diseases a little flossing might help prevent.

Endocarditis

This rare infection of the valves and lining of the heart muscle can be fatal if treatment is not successful, so you can imagine why preventing it in the first place is the preferred course of action.

Patients with heart conditions will always want to keep their doctor informed of their condition in order to properly prepare before and after any appointment.

Because bacteria in the mouth can be released into the bloodstream during an appointment and infect the heart in at-risk patients, it’s best to maintain an open line of communication with your doctor, and keep as clean a mouth as you can.

Pregnancy and Birth

Generally speaking, dental work can be safely performed through the first half of the third trimester, but earlier is always better (preferably before pregnancy).

The American Dental Association has pointed to research linking premature birth and low birth weight to women with periodontitis (gum disease), so you’ll want to schedule a full check-up early.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease with tentacles. Since it touches and degrades so many aspects of a person's physical health, it becomes difficult to be mindful of all its complications without proper vigilance.

Yet, vigilance is precisely what is needed, particularly regarding its role in a healthy mouth, because having diabetes can not only lead to oral disease, but the presence of oral disease can also aggravate diabetes.

When it comes to diabetes and the mouth, it is, as the scientific community calls it, a two way street.

Colon Cancer

You may not think to link a healthy mouth with a healthy colon, but researchers at Case Western Reserve University have done just that, linking the oral bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum, and colon cancer.

Their research suggests this bacterium has the ability to “turn on tumor growth in the colon” a discovery that may lead to early detection for at-risk patients.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Research suggests treating acute cases of periodontitis can reduce the discomfort associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Diseases of the Heart and Brain

Lastly, you may have heard poor oral health habits are linked to diseases of the heart and brain. For the full scoop, read our articles on the connection to cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s.

Are you ready for Fall?

Fall is right around the corner. The changing of the seasons is a great time to pay extra close attention to your dental health - here’s a checklist of 7 great ideas for your whole family:

1. Get a dental check-up: Summer’s end is a great time to think about heading back to the dentist for a visit. Schedule much-needed appointments for everyone.

2. Replace your toothbrush: Homeowners and renters are familiar with the time-honored drill of replacing heating and air conditioning filters with the change of seasons. It’s also a great time to switch out your toothbrush! So, when you change the filter, change your toothbrush as well!

3. Switch to sugar free gum: Use a sugar-free gum that contains Xylitol – a natural sweetener derived from plants. Xylitol doesn't break down like sugar, and can help keep a neutral pH level in your mouth, which will help you avoid cavities.

4. Eliminate a habit that’s bad for your teeth: Whether it’s smoking, acidic beverages, or chewing habits that can wreck your teeth, try eliminating a habit that does harm to your teeth. Doing so now is a good idea because we’re still outside the hectic holiday window. There are fewer demands on your willpower reserves, making a successful effort that much more likely.

5. Pick up a good dental habit: There are a lot of good dental habits that will help your teeth year-round. A few new ones might be dry-brushing, going with the new, healthy food choices, or wearing a mouthguard if you play sports. Try a few on for size to see what works for you.

6. Buy yourself an early holiday gift: Why not do something really great for your teeth by picking up a dental care tool to make your teeth look great, your gums feel great, and your breath smell great. There are a lot of easy to use, budget-friendly options, including teeth whitening, interproximal brushes, dental irrigators, and even tongue scrapers.

7. Be sure to check up on your dental benefits: As the end of your insurance year approaches, you’re going to want to take advantage of any unused dental benefits that may still be available. In most cases any unused portion is lost when your new insurance year starts.

We hope you enjoy the start of the new season. If we can help with anything, or to schedule your next appointment, call Mid Hudson Dental at (845) 462-1118.

08/17/2020

As a good rule of thumb, you should change your toothbrush every 3 months. Choosing the right toothbrush comes down to two specifics: what’s recommended, and what’s good for your mouth.

The Standard Recommendations:

Go soft: Overwhelmingly, soft bristles are better for your teeth and gums. Yes, you can buy medium bristles and stiff bristles, but unless your dentist has recommended that specific type of brush for your mouth, go soft.

Go round: This confuses a lot of people since the shapes and patterns of bristles are mostly at all sorts of whacky angles. Nothing really appears to be round! What round actually means is that the bristles are “end-rounded,” meaning the rough edges of each bristle have been smoothed out to avoid hurting sensitive gum tissue.

Go for the seal: The seal of the American Dental Association (ADA), that is. Believe it or not, there aren’t many toothbrushes allowed to display the ADA seal, which certifies the product as safe and that it will hold up to regular use.

The Personal Recommendations:

Pick the right size: The head of the toothbrush should fit comfortably in your mouth so you can reach the surface of each tooth (front and back). This includes your back molars too, so if you can’t do this with your current brush, it’s likely too big.

Pick the right handle: The shape and design of the handle all depends on how you like to hold your toothbrush when you’re brushing. There’s a myriad of ways to hold your brush. A little experimentation here is probably best.

Pick the right bristle shape: Experts say to pick the one that feels best in your mouth. The basic idea is that bristle design will feel different to different people depending on how big their teeth are, whether they have a lot of spacing, braces, prosthetics … a million things, really. So, again, “feel” is most important.

At Mid Hudson Dental, we're taking every precaution to keep you safe.

Mid Hudson Dental has, for over 40 years, been diligent in ensuring that our office protects our patients' health and safety in order to reduce the risks associated with infectious diseases. Ways in which we are doing this include the following:

HEPA filtration with our HVAC system to reduce airborne germs and pollutants and provide clean fresh air throughout the office

All dental staff members put on masks and wash their hands upon entering the building and have their temperatures taken as well as wipe down their work stations and work areas continuously throughout the day.

All dental care providers wear masks and face shields and disposable gowns and scrub their hands frequently throughout the day.

All patients must have masks upon entering the building and have their temperature taken. Patients are also asked COVID screening questions when making appointments by phone and upon entering the office.

Patients also have access to hand sanitizer to scrub their hands with before being led to treatment rooms.

These measures are being taken everyday to ensure the health and safety of our patients, staff, and anyone else who visits us.Thank you for your continued loyalty and trust you have placed in us at Mid Hudson Dental.

Dear Patient:

We are pleased to inform you that dental offices in our region of New York State have received clearance to resume all dental services. Mid Hudson Dental will begin to contact patients to schedule appointments, and patients can call our office at (845) 462-1118 to arrange an appointment as well.

All safety precautions that we have put in place will remain. Our office follows infection control recommendations made by the American Dental Association (ADA), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). We follow the activities of these agencies so that we are up-to-date on any new rulings or guidance that may be issued. You may see some changes when it is time for your next appointment. We made these changes to help protect our patients and staff.

For example:

Our office will communicate with you beforehand to ask some screening questions. You’ll be asked those same questions again when you are in the office.

We ask that you call from the parking lot when you arrive and wear a face covering when entering the building. Your temperature will be taken.

We have hand sanitizer that we will ask you to use when you enter the office. You will also find some in the reception area and other places in the office for you to use as needed.

You may see that our waiting room will no longer offer magazines, children’s toys and so forth, since those items are difficult to clean and disinfect.

Appointments will be managed to allow for social distancing between patients. That might mean that you’re offered fewer options for scheduling your appointment.

We will do our best to allow greater time between patients to reduce waiting times for you, as well as to reduce the number of patients in the reception area at any one time.

We look forward to seeing you again and are happy to answer any questions you may have about the steps we take to keep you, and every patient, safe in our practice. To make an appointment, please call our office at 845-462-1118.

Thank you for being our patient. We value your trust and loyalty and look forward to welcoming back our patients, neighbors and friends.

Sincerely,
Dr. Christopher Wilantewicz and Staff

Stay Healthy While You're Home & Prevent Gum Disease

While New York is on pause and you're at home, taking care of your physical and dental health is more important than ever. To keep your immunity strong, eat a balanced diet, drink plenty of water, take daily walks or engage in other exercise and get plenty of rest and sleep.

To avoid gum disease, a solid oral care regime is imperative - brush twice a day, floss at night and use mouthwash. Gingivitis and its advanced cousin, Periodontal disease, are silent offenders. Most often, you may not even know you should be concerned. What's worse is that a growing number of scientists believe that plaque and gum disease can also influence and exacerbate conditions like heart disease and stroke.

Here are some tips to that will help you prevent gum disease:

1. Eat more chicken, cheese, nuts and milk. Consuming more chicken, as well as other meats, cheeses, nuts, and milk provide your teeth with calcium and phosphorous needed to remineralize enamel after it’s been bombarded by the acids that cause tooth decay.

2. Eat more veggies. Everyone knows we need more vegetables in our diets. Our waistlines and our teeth love them for their water content, as well as their vitamin and mineral profiles.

3. Use an anti-microbial mouthwash. The key here is using a mouthwash that is anti-microbial. Find one you'll actually use every day, and use it once in the morning after brushing, and again after brushing before bed.

4. Try a toothbrush that moves. Get adventurous and test out an electronic toothbrush that’s been endorsed by the American Dental Association (ADA). These toothbrushes are more effective than you'll ever be at removing plaque and bacteria, and will protect your gums from aggressive brushing.

5. Quit smoking. This one is always worth mentioning. Smoking is always bad for your body, your gums, and your teeth.

05/12/2020

Dear Valued Patients,

The American Dental Association's Return to Work Guidelines for Dentistry are still being worked on. There is no set date as to when dental offices can resume seeing all patients at this time. Talks of allowing some offices to re-open by May 15th are not confirmed and will most likely be staged in accordance with COVID-19 exposure rates in the area.

Mid Hudson Dental will continue to stay abreast of the mandate issued by the State as well as recommendations by the New York State Dental Association. We will continue to treat emergency patients while practicing safe distancing between patients, strict infection control protocols, as well as screening and taking patient temperatures. Hopefully Mid Hudson Dental can begin treating patients very soon and we will begin contacting patients to schedule treatment. If you have a dental emergency/problem please call our office and speak to one of our staff.

Mid Hudson Dental wishes that all of our patients and their families will stay safe and healthy during this difficult time.

Coronavirus (Covid-19) Basic Protective Measures

We at Mid Hudson Dental are concerned about the health and safety of our staff, patients, your families and the people of our greater community as we battle the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19). We are sharing with you updated information from the World Health Organization so that you can stay informed of the precautions you should be taking during this time. Please note: Mid Hudson Dental is currently open ONLY for dental emergencies until the situation changes and we are able to resume normal patient treatment and practice hours. If you have an emergency, please call us at (845) 462-1118 – we do have office hours from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Our telephones are being monitored after 12 p.m., so if you leave a message, the doctor will get back to you as soon as possible.

Most people who become infected experience mild illness and recover, but it can be more severe for others. Take care of your health and protect others by doing the following:

Wash your hands frequently - Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain social distancing - Maintain at least 6 feet of distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth.
Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.Practice respiratory hygiene
Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.
Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19. If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical care early.

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.
Stay informed and follow advice given by your healthcare provider.

Stay informed on the latest developments about COVID-19. Follow advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority or your employer on how to protect yourself and others from COVID-19.
Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on whether COVID-19 is spreading in your area. They are best placed to advise on what people in your area should be doing to protect themselves. Protection measures for persons who are in or have recently visited (past 14 days) areas where COVID-19 is spreading
Follow the guidance outlined above.

Stay at home if you begin to feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and slight runny nose, until you recover. Why? Avoiding contact with others and visits to medical facilities will allow these facilities to operate more effectively and help protect you and others from possible COVID-19 and other viruses.

If you develop fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical advice promptly as this may be due to a respiratory infection or other serious condition. Call in advance and tell your provider of any recent travel or contact with travelers. Why? Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also help to prevent possible spread of COVID-19 and other viruses. In addition to the above, please pay attention to basic oral hygiene to keep your mouth healthy during this difficult time. Staying busy and engaged while you are home is also important in order to ward off boredom and frustration – exercising, listening to music, watching television shows or movies, reading and/or learning something new, connecting online or via the telephone with friends and neighbors are all good ways to keep yourself and your families healthy while we wait out the effects of this pandemic.

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the World Health Organization website at www.who.int and through your national and local public health authority.

We hope that you all stay safe and healthy, and we hope to see you again soon!
