Friday Afternoon Mindfulness Course in Tysons VA on “Suffering is Optional, Well-being is Natural”

This spring, I am delighted to offer a non-sectarian Mindfulness Meditation Course consisting of seven 90-minute classes, held on Fridays at 2 PM from March 27 to May 15. Rooted in a 2,600-year-old wisdom tradition, mindfulness meditation cultivates clarity and well-being helping us see life as it is, rather than mistaking a “snake for a rope.” Through mindful living, participants can discover genuine well-being and develop skillful ways to meet life’s challenges with understanding and compassion. Today, people of all ages and backgrounds turn to mindfulness meditation to support mental stability, improve quality of life, promote healing, and manage the stress of everyday living.

With the theme “Suffering is Optional, Well-being is Natural”, the class will take place in a supportive environment and offer a balanced blend of clear, easy-to-follow teaching, guided meditation practices, meaningful storytelling, group discussions, and Q&A sessions. Participants may also request one-on-one access to the teacher for personal guidance.

The class is free and open to the public at Arbor Row Center in Tysons Virginia. Recognize Desires vs Necessity

The Short 4-minute teaching video (https://youtu.be/mENoDJ_wCQ8) was recorded during a weekend well-being retreat at Sinh Thuc Meditation Center. During this talk, I offers a profound reflection on how to discern between our everyday desires and our true-life necessities.

Many of us often confuse what we want with what we need, mistaking preferences for essentials. This misunderstanding can create unnecessary stress and make our already complex lives even more challenging.

I invite you to watch this brief yet insightful teaching and apply its wisdom to cultivate greater ease and well-being in your daily life. I would love to hear about your experiences and reflections.

Mindfulness is NOT Awareness w/ Purpose

Years ago, I regularly taught mindfulness meditation each semester at the local college. One day during the break, a student came up to me and asked, “What is the definition of mindfulness? Is it paying attention from moment to moment? If it is, then it’s exhausting.”
She continued, “I am a federal protective agent. My job is to protect VIPs. Every day, that is all I do. I pay careful attention to everything. I watch everyone near and far—what they are doing, where their hands are, what they are looking at. By the time my shift ends, I am exhausted.”
I listened with empathy. I smiled gently and said, half-jokingly, “I hope that is not mindfulness, because if it is, then we are in trouble.” Then I continued, “What you have described is what I call ‘awareness with purpose’—paying attention with a specific agenda and intention. Mindfulness is the opposite. Mindfulness is natural awareness, open awareness without any agenda or purpose.”
“Think of a camera,” I said. “When you take a photo on the normal setting, the picture includes everything in view clearly. That is just how the camera works; it does not require much effort. This is like mindfulness—natural and effortless. But when you zoom the camera in on a single object, only that object is in focus. This is no longer the camera’s natural use and it requires effort. That is like awareness with specific purpose—not mindfulness.”
“So even when you sit cross-legged on a meditation cushion, quietly trying to guide your mind to stay with the breath and to be in the present moment, that is still not true mindfulness as it is paying attention with purpose. Mindfulness is effortless and as natural as life itself.”

In retreats at Sinh Thuc Meditation Center, I often say, “If what you are doing feels too hard, you may be doing it wrong.” I warmly invite you to join the Mar 20-22 Spring weekend retreat, where we will explore in-depth the Four Foundations of Mindfulness in practical, clear, and easy-to-understand ways.

Living with greater Authenticity and Contentment

The spiritual path is not about changing external circumstances, conquering difficulties, or acquiring what we desire. Its true purpose is to understand ourselves completely, so we can rise above the limits of our own perceptions. Only when we see ourselves clearly do we become aware of the truth and begin to transform our actions, allowing us to live each day with greater authenticity and contentment.

Teaching Talk on "Common Misunderstanding on the Spiritual Path"

On a beautiful summer day at the outdoor Serenity Hall at Sinh Thuc Meditation Center in Wardensville WV, nestled in a tranquil forest filled with birdsong and the gentle sound of a flowing waterfall; I talked about several common misconceptions on the spiritual path—such as the belief that struggles arise simply because we lack training and must practice diligently to become more skillful, or that the ultimate goal of spirituality is merely peace and joy. In this talk, I carefully explained the three fundamental objectives shared by all genuine spiritual traditions and emphasized that the spiritual journey, much like water, should flow effortlessly, adapting to conditions and moving gracefully through obstacles. The Teaching talk can be listened on YouTube at https://youtu.be/1IBZpiOV-N8

Living Well without Regrets

We all want to be happy and work hard to have happiness. Unfortunately, happiness continues to be very elusive. The good news is we can learn a lot from other’s life lessons, so that we can avoid making the same mistakes. People on their death beds are very direct and honest about what they feel. I would like to share the top five most common regrets of the dying according to the hospice workers.
Let reflect on these priceless life lessons, and let them not be our regrets!

1. I wish I have had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me - This was the most common regret of all. When people realize that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams, plans have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honored even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.
2. I wish I had not worked so hard - This came from every male patient. They missed their children's youth and their partner's companionship. All the men deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.
3. I wish I have had the courage to express my feelings - Many people suppressed their feelings to keep peace with family members and others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many even developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.
4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends - Often they would not truly realize the full benefits of old friends until their dying weeks. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.
5. I wish that I had let myself be happier - This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realize until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content, when deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

You are invited to listen to a teaching talk on "the Essential Elements on the Spiritual Path" on YouTube at https://youtu.be/1weOQpxaby0 The Teaching talk is from the Spring weekend retreat at Sinh Thuc Meditation Center in Wardensville, WV. At this talk, I shared that regardless of the spiritual tradition one takes, it needs to have these essential elements to ensure well-being. I also shared the following important topics:
- The need to understanding the mind to not wasting time & effort on the wrong things.
- Aware of the various states of the mind using images of the mirror to understand the complex teaching.
- How direct experience is required to realize life moment.
- How mindfulness is often misunderstood in the traditional practice such that the more one practice to be mindful the less mindful one would be, …
Several practical questions were asked and answered such as does baby have a better chance than adult on realizing the truth?

Finally, I shared the uncomfortable true that most of us are imprisoned by the mind and because it is an invisible jail, we do not even know to free ourselves!

Enjoy listening to the Talk, and let me know your thoughts!

Aware of the Experiences: Sensory and Conceptual.

Life can only be experienced two ways either via Sensory experience or Conceptual experience. Sensory experience is experiencing directly via the physical senses i.e. eyes seeing sight, ears hearing sound, nose smelling scents, etc. Conceptual experience is experiencing via the mind with its interpretation, thinking. Sensory experience receives life moments accurately as they are. It does not see “husband” or “wife” only the physical forms (sight, sound, scent…) in the here & now. Sensory experience does not see “good husband” or “beautiful wife.” These are the interpretation, thinking of the mind that appear only in the conceptual experience.

In our life, without knowing, we are often completely engrossed in the conceptual experience. Living in the perceived realm that may look nothing like the true reality. Awakening from the dream world is simpler than you think. Awakening is not about practicing to get rid of the conceptual experience, but simply aware of, know the experiences i.e. Is this experience Sensory/Direct (Trực tiếp) or Conceptual (Tưởng)?

To truly live life and not get caught in the drama of the mind, Let’s aware and awaken!

P.S. - Sharing with you a photo when I was directly experienced life moments in Budapest, Hungary and recognized the conceptual experiences of the beautiful and magnificent sceneries. Not getting caught in the drama, thinking of the mind that things should be this or I should do that and simply be & experience life moments as they are (:-))
