A little over two years ago I left New York City, the only place I had ever worked as a doctor, and took a job with a smaller community hospital based practice in the suburbs of Philadelphia. The team consists of myself, my assistant and my nurse. We are 'St Mary OB/GYN Bucks County'. I collaborated with docs in the area to share an on call schedule. We opened our doors and women started to come in to see us. These women told their family and their friends and their colleagues who came to see us as well. In two short years we've taken care of countless women and it seems that we're pretty good at what we do. They say that if you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life and that's how I felt today when we were presented with this plaque for providing outstanding patient care to some very satisfied patient who gave us scores in the top 10% nationwide. I am humbled and grateful to know the hard work and dedication we put in day after day is appreciated.

I ask all my patients how they are coping and I am always on the lookout for those at-risk patients who are really struggling. Please check out my contribution to this weekend's Philadelphia Inquirer on . If you or someone you know needs additional support, please know that we are here to help.

For some mothers, the first few weeks with a newborn can bring on severe depression and a deep emotional pain that refuses to quit.

"But, what is a surgeon who doesn't operate?" I have a love and respect for the operating room, but the joy of being a surgeon certainly comes with its risks as this insightful article reminds us.

It is a delicate balance the surgeon must strike to remain fit to operate, a balance shockingly easy to disrupt.

Today, medical students everywhere showed amazing solidarity in staging demonstrations in protest of recent events in New York City and Ferguson. Scenes like this were seen at over 70 medical schools across the country. These students at my med school, staged a "die-in" outside Ross Hall, where I used to attend classes. Powerful images.
