Today is , a time to recognize the thousands of lives that are lost to overdose each year. It is imperative that we all take the time to educate ourselves about substance use disorder, overdose, and resources like fentanyl test strips and naloxone or nalmefene to save lives. Here are some quick facts about overdose in the United States.
1. There were an estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2024. That's a decrease of 26.9% from the 110,037 deaths estimated in 2023.
2. Approximately 48,000 drug overdose deaths in 2024 were caused by fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that is used as to lace illicit substances. It can be found in anything from illicit opioids to methamphetamine.
3. There are people behind these numbers, and they deserve to live. Every person who passes away from a drug overdose is someone's child, sibling, parent, and friend. These deaths are preventable, and we can help minimize their impact through community resources that provide fentanyl test strips, offer overdose reversal training, and help people get into recovery.
You can prevent overdose deaths. Carry naloxone or nalmefene and save a life.
