For the Shaffer brothers, basketball is a family affair at Abington Heights High School. After injuries sidelined both athletes, physical therapy also became part of their family’s routine.
Logan, a freshman, came to NovaCare Rehabilitation in Scranton, Pennsylvania, with low-back pain that flared with even small movements. Under the care of Physical Therapist Rob Hartman, he worked through a program of core stabilization, stretching, strengthening and posture training to reduce pain and improve mobility. With time and effort, Logan returned to the court, playing without pain and with renewed confidence.
His older brother, Jordan, sought treatment for quad and ankle injuries that began during soccer season and worsened once basketball started. Rob designed a plan that included strengthening, balance work, mobility training and sport-specific drills to restore function and power. Jordan’s goal was to dunk again, and today he can. He is entering his senior year feeling strong and prepared for the season ahead.
“I feel like I did before my injuries, and I’m excited to play basketball for my senior year,” Jordan said. “I recently had my last tournament for AAU basketball and played the best I had all summer.”
Logan added: “Rob was kind, but also pushed me. He really helped me get to where I am today. He knew a lot, and I am very appreciative of him. I would recommend NovaCare to my friends.”
