Regular self-assessment and professional dermatological screening are the primary defense mechanisms against cutaneous malignancies. Early detection is critical for favorable treatment outcomes. Here are ways to monitor for the ABCDEs of melanoma:
• Asymmetry: One half of the lesion does not match the other.
• Border: The edges are irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined.
• Color: The color is not uniform and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
• Diameter: The lesion is larger than 6 millimeters across (about the size of a pencil eraser).
• Evolving: The mole is changing in size, shape, or color.
If you notice any of these or have concerns about your skin, be sure to schedule a comprehensive skin evaluation with Dr. Lu to ensure early detection.
