Vitamin D protects telomeres!

Results from a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial reveal that vitamin D supplementation helps maintain telomeres, protective caps at the ends of chromosomes that shorten during aging and are linked to the development of certain diseases.

The trial involved over 25,000 participants in the USA.

“VITAL is the first large-scale and long-term randomized trial to show that vitamin D supplements protect telomeres and preserve telomere length,” said co-author JoAnn Manson, the principal investigator of VITAL (VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL).

UVB healing light

Narrowband UVB light, which is not linked to skin cancer, has been used for years in the treatment of psoriasis. Now, a handful of clinical trials have shown that multiple sclerosis (MS) also responds to UVB which calms an overstimulated immune system.

The new studies suggest that UVB exposure might also work for other autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease and colitis.

These conditions are more common in people who get very little sun exposure, as are Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease that appear to have some immune system disruption.
