We firmly believe that not everyone needs a doula. But if a woman feels called to have doula support, she deserves to be fully supported in that choice.

Women choose to work with doulas for many reasons. Often, they develop a deep, trusting relationship that feels more personal and continuous than the one they have with their OB or midwife. That connection can create a strong sense of safety, confidence, and emotional security during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Doulas provide steady, one-on-one support offering comfort measures, encouragement, advocacy, and evidence-based information. This helps women feel more informed, grounded, and empowered in their decisions.

Beyond emotional support, doulas can also help partners feel more confident and involved, assist with coping techniques during labor, and contribute to a more positive and satisfying birth experience. Their consistent presence throughout labor is something unique, as most OB's and midwives typically step in more actively during the later stages or only for the delivery itself.

If your provider, regardless of your planned birth setting, dismisses or discourages your desire to have a doula, it may be worth pausing to consider whether they truly respect and align with your values, preferences, and vision for your birth.

WE LOVE WHAT WE DO!

When we birth, we don’t just birth babies.

We birth ourselves, we birth our families and we reshape our lives.

It’s so important to get good information on which to base pregnancy and birth decisions.

Because they can affect us for a very long time.

Perhaps the rest of your life.

It's also important to understand that it doesn't matter what the guideline says, or what anyone else thinks.

What matters is what's right for you.

If you'd like to read more from someone who has a PhD, more than twenty five years of experience as a midwife and a holistic, heart-centred approach to birth - oh, and who doesn't think it's her job to make your decisions - there's loads of free information on my website, https://www.sarawickham.com

You can also read lots more about birth-related decision making in my book: What's Right For Me? Making decisions in pregnancy and childbirth.

I couldn’t get a picture that did credit to that beautiful crescent moon when I arrived home early this morning from the second of two lovely Solstice births. Welcome to the world to two beautiful new souls!

💛 What if the way we care for new mothers is all wrong? Not just lacking. Not just outdated. But built on a model that forgets the mother the moment the baby is born.

As a midwife, I saw what was missing. Mothers — in this magical, vulnerable, transformative time — were often left without the care they needed and deserved. Too often, a mom gets one rushed appointment — six or eight weeks out — if that. By then, she’s often overwhelmed, alone, maybe even depressed. And when she finally gets seen? She’s given 15 minutes. In a cold office. With a baby — and maybe a toddler — in tow.

It’s part of why I went to medical school: to bring postpartum care back where it belongs — to the mother.

When I was a home birth midwife, I visited mamas at home five or six times in the first few weeks — tending to stitches, tears, bleeding, breastfeeding, baby blues, and birth stories. That care wasn’t extra. It was essential.

This week on the On Health podcast, I’m joined by my dear friend Dr. Eva Zasloff— a family physician, artist, doula, and founder of Tova Health — a home-based fourth trimester care model changing how we support new families.

We talk about:

🌿 Why the current postpartum system is broken
🌿 How postpartum depression is often a symptom of the system, not the mother
🌿 What home visits, Zoom mama circles, and birth stories can heal
🌿 And how we reclaim the sacred fourth trimester — together

✨ This episode is for you if you're a mother. A midwife. A doctor. A doula. A partner. Or someone who believes new mothers deserve so much more.

With love for every mother who’s been left to figure it out alone —

We see you.
We’re with you.
We’re changing this.

Hey mama! 🤗 Did you know humans are carry mammals? We’re biologically designed for closeness - think breastfeeding, babywearing, and snuggles galore! Even our milk composition supports this parenting style, with lower fat and protein content for frequent, small feedings.

You might notice your baby tends to fuss when placed in a crib or “nest” - this could be because their biology is designed for closeness! Unlike mammals that thrive in nests or follow their mothers, human babies need closeness for secure bonds and healthy development.

Trust your instincts, mama - your body and baby know what’s up! Other carry mammals, like apes and marsupials, show us that closeness is key. Whether you’re nap-trapped, babywearing, breastfeeding, or just enjoying snuggle time, know that these moments are nurturing your baby’s growth. So go ahead, hold that baby close, and trust the biology. 💕
