Friday Fun Fact!

The leading cause of death in the Civil War was not battle wounds but the aftermath. Pneumonia, typhoid, diarrhea/dysentery, and malaria were the predominant illnesses. Altogether, causing about 660,000 soldier deaths. Today we have much a much better understanding of sanitation and how illnesses spread.

Fun Fact Friday (delayed)
Black widow spiders are the only spiders native to Virginia that are venomous. Their habitat is usually low to the ground and commonly in things such as pots, gardening equipment, woodpiles and patio furniture. Black widows are not aggressive spiders and do not seek out to bite humans they bite only when they feel threatened. The bite of a black widow is rarely felt by humans when they first are bitten the pain occurs 30/120 minutes later. Black widows venom is a neurotoxin and can cause sever muscle pain, tremors , nausea,vomiting, headaches , elevated heart rate , blood pressure and respiratory rate. It can also cause abdominal pain. Symptoms usually resolve 24/72 hours later with out any specific medical intervention.

Friday Fun Fact:
"Black Death, also known as "The Plague" is caused by the bacteria Yersinia pestis which is transmitted by fleas which feed on rodent. It caused the deaths of 1/3 of the European population in the 14th century. Plague is endemic in the western United States but the infection rate is low because the areas affected are rural and largely uninhabited. There were only 106 cases of human plague reported in the US from 2000-2018. There are now many different antibiotics which effectively treat plague.
