Dr. Simpson has been providing general primary care to residents of Fauquier and surrounding counties since 1993. He was born in the Shenandoah Valley, grew up in Fairfax County, and went to both college and medical school at the University of Virginia. He has advanced training and experience in geriatric care, wound care, nursing home care, rehabilitation care, home care, and health services administration. He certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1993, 2003, and 2014. As a house call physician, Dr. Simpson provides privacy and convenience by coming straight to you. ALZHEIMERS BLOOD TEST

Researchers have developed a blood test that diagnoses Alzheimer's disease and measures its progression with 92% accuracy. Unlike existing blood tests that only aid in diagnosis, the new test can distinguish between early- and late-stage Alzheimer's and differentiate it from other causes of cognitive impairment. The test identifies levels of MTBR-tau243, a protein that indicates toxic tau accumulation in the brain, correlating with Alzheimer's severity. Researchers found patients with non-Alzheimer's cognitive impairment showed normal levels of the protein, while patients with mild cognitive symptoms from Alzheimer's showed elevated tau protein levels, and those in the dementia phase showed levels up to 200 times higher.

Alzheimer's affects nearly 7 million Americans. Accumulations of molecules known as amyloid beta plaques and misfolded tau proteins are believed to play a key role. This breakthrough offers a potential tool to accurately diagnose the disease while tailoring treatments to an individual's specific disease stage.

(As reported in 1440 today and initially in Nature Medicine -- no word yet on when this new test will be available to the general public . . . )

🧰 DOC DOOR Tip: Did you know that 99% of Americans born before 1980 are infected with the virus ('varicella-zoster') that causes SHINGLES -- a painful skin rash that will afflict 1 in 3 of us during our lifetime?! The rash typically clears in 4-6 weeks, but many are left with significant pain ('post-herpetic neuralgia') for months or even years afterwards. That pain can be life-altering, depending on how severe and the location, especially uncomfortable at pressure points like bra lines, belt lines, and buttocks.
We used to have a vaccine to prevent shingles (Zostavax) but it was only about 50% effective, so it was replaced with a newer vaccine (Shingrix), which is >90% effective!
The CDC recommends 2 doses of Shingrix, 2-6 months apart, anytime after age 50, and good for life (no boosters needed) at protecting against this painful condition. See your doctor with questions you may have, or to arrange vaccination at the office or at most pharmacies.
