Raise your hand if change is hard for you. ✋

The fall season we’re in reminds us how necessary change is. After the leaves 🍁 change and the plants die, we enter winter. It’s dark. It’s cold. It seems like it’s going to last FOREVER. 🥶 Seasonal depression spikes, especially in areas where we lose the majority of our sunshine for several months. 😶‍🌫️ Then, spring FINALLY arrives! 🌷We welcome new, fresh, beautiful growth…just in time to shine ☀️ for summer.

Improving our mental health looks similar to the 4 season cycle. Confronting the darkest parts of ourselves and our lives is like entering winter. We NEED our old beliefs, habits, and behaviors to die in order to welcome the fresh, healed, enlightened, and aware self that follows. It’s uncomfortable and it’s hard, we will not deny that. But we have also seen first hand that it’s worth it. 💛

10/13/2022

The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence defines domestic violence as the willful intimidation, physical assault, battery, sexual assault, and/or other abusive behavior as part of a systemic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another.

Abuse is a cycle that needs to be interrupted! Please help end the silence and shame around abuse. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, please help them reach out to the National Domestic Violence Hotline. Professionals are available to help 24/7, regardless of the person’s readiness to leave the relationship.

It is SO HARD for some of us to approach new relationships because of a fear of the person/people not liking us for our true, authentic selves.

We all need our people who get us; people who love us despite our past and our mistakes. More importantly, we need to love ourselves for all of our mistakes and baggage and quirks. We will know we truly love and accept ourselves when we can approach a new situation with an “I will still see my worth no matter what they think” mindset. A counselor can help us find that crucial inner peace when we don’t know how to find it on our own.

There is a misconception that talking to others about su***de increases their risk, but this is not true. Asking actually let’s them know you are there to listen in a non-judgmental way, and gives them space to share their inner experience. This approach, coupled with helping them find the help they need may save their life.

September is su***de prevention month.

The way we talk about su***de matters! Words have the power to instill hope and minimize shame around the topic of mental illness.

It’s important to remember that mental illness, like most other illnesses, is treatable. Suicidal ideation as a symptom of mental illness is also treatable! Let’s approach the topic of su***de with care, beginning with how we talk about it.

We see the phrase, 𝕐𝕠𝕦 𝕒𝕣𝕖 𝕖𝕟𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙, so often…which is awesome! But we wanted to dive deeper into what that actually 𝕞𝕖𝕒𝕟𝕤, because finding meaning is a thing we counselors do.

Melissa Camara Wilkins eloquently describes this phrase and all that comes with it in her blog post, 𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥 𝕀𝕥 𝕄𝕖𝕒𝕟𝕤 𝕥𝕠 𝔹𝕖 𝔼𝕟𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙, found on her website: melissacamarawilkins.com

Thanks, ! We would do well to keep reminding each other of this.
