Millions of Americans benefit from tax credits that help them afford their health insurance costs. But if Congress does not act ASAP, many people with mental health conditions may not be able to afford their health coverage next year.

These credits are known as “enhanced Advance Premium Tax Credits” (eAPTCs). You may better know them as health care tax credits, which are monthly savings that help lower the cost of Marketplace health insurance for millions of Americans.

These tax credits are set to expire at the end of the year. If Congress lets this happen, it would nearly double monthly premiums and lead to 4.2 million becoming uninsured because they won’t be able to afford the increased cost. For example, a family of four making $60,000 could see their monthly insurance premiums jump from about $100 to more than $300. When people lose health care coverage, mental health care becomes even more out of reach for families.

Tell your members of Congress TODAY to protect affordable coverage for millions of Americans here: https://nami.quorum.us/campaign/142526/.

“Benefits are considered mandatory spending and will continue uninterrupted through the shutdown. However, thousands of Social Security Administration employees — about 12 percent of the staff — have been furloughed and services not directly related to paying benefits may be halted.”

NAMI is deeply alarmed by reports of significant staffing cuts at the SAMHSA that threaten to weaken the stability of our nation’s mental health and substance use systems—especially during a time of growing need.

SAMHSA’s leadership in advancing prevention, treatment, and crisis care—especially through initiatives like the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline—is essential. These professionals help millions of Americans access hope, healing, and community support.

As the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization, NAMI calls on policymakers to protect and strengthen SAMHSA’s capacity to serve people and families in every community. Now more than ever, we must invest in the people and programs that make recovery possible.
