A day after the Department of Health and Human Services implemented a late-night rollback of $2 billion in mental health and substance use funding, an administration official confirmed late Wednesday that the grants are now being restored.

Many of the affected grant programs had bipartisan support and President Donald Trump has supported them in the past.

Late yesterday, hundreds of congressionally-appropriated SAMHSA grants were abruptly terminated โ€” putting critical mental health and substance use services at risk across the country.

These cuts threaten su***de prevention, overdose prevention, peer and family recovery support, and community-based mental health programs that millions of people rely on every day.

As NAMI CEO Daniel H. Gillison, Jr. shared, these decisions arenโ€™t just numbers on paper โ€” they have real and harmful consequences for people, families, and communities.

Brandon joined our Youth Programs Director, Mia, at Palisades High School yesterday where they shared stories of recovery, crushed stigma, and inspired hope with our NAMI Ending the Silence presentation.

Ending the Silence is a free, evidence-based, 50-minute session designed for middle and high school students. Your students will learn about mental health conditions through a brief presentation, short videos, and personal testimony from someone who describes their journey to recovery.

Having a loved oneโ€™s mental health crisis play out with a police chase on a public stage is every caregiverโ€™s nightmare. Itโ€™s time we revisit these laws to allow family members and caregivers to intervene BEFORE things like this happen.

On the night before the U-Haul chase, Ryan Laskowski's family tried to get him help, only to be told he did not meet the standard for emergency psychiatric evaluation.

His sister says: "My brother is responsible for his actions, and he is also living with a chronic, relapsing brain disease that distorts reality and impairs judgment, often stripping people of insight into their own illness. That combination is exactly what modern mental health policy should be designed to address โ€” early, carefully, and with due process.

"Instead, our system waits for catastrophe." Guest column: https://www.buckscountyherald.com/opinion/guest-opinion/waiting-for-catastrophe-is-not-a-civil-liberties-policy/article_38d385d0-ef76-48d0-ab40-f7864f93942e.html
