Hair loss:

Hair loss is not an easy thing to address. However, there are a few common causes that stand out. The first is low iron, which is easily tested on a blood test. Be sure to check ferritin also. Ferritin is the storage form of iron, and serum iron is the blood level (what's in current use/circulation), and they both need to be optimal. The second is low thyroid function. What happens is that since the thyroid controls moisture balance (think low thyroid causing constipation, due to drier stools), the skin becomes too dry to hold in the hair. You'll first see the outer eyebrows become thinner, and even hair on the arms can be lost also. Optimal thyroid function is when the TSH, thyroid stimulating hormone, is below 2, and other doctors may tell you to have it even lower, below 1. The third cause is women's hormones, like after pregnancy.
I've also seen a case of alopecia areata in a little girl that started after eating too much Halloween candy, so this would be a physical/dietary stressor. This probably happened because sugar, in some people, interferes with utilization of iron.
What are your favorite natural strategies for hair loss and why?

To solve hair loss with low iron, obviously you want to add a good quality iron supplement. Most don't cause constipation. If it's from a thyroid issue, I use herbal combinations with tyrosine, the amino acid that makes the T in T3 and T4. Glandular products, products made from animal glands, may also help. For hormonal causes in women, I use homeopathy:
Natrum muriaticum is great for hair loss after having a baby.
Sepia can be used if it is due to physical over-exertion (after a race or sporting event, for example).
Homeopathy can also be useful for digestive causes of hair loss: think of Lycopodium (for bloating worse in the afternoon), or Kali carbonicum, for bloating accompanied by weakness and/or back pain.
Dietary tip: include a source of iodine, like fish or seaweed for thyroid support. These are the only sources of iodine other than iodized salt.

About Naturopathic Medicine

Clients come to naturopathic medicine with a variety of concerns, from short-term symptoms like pain from a sprain or fall, to long-term symptoms like headaches, auto-immune diseases or osteoporosis. Naturopathic medicine does not treat any disease. Rather, you will work as a team with your naturopathic doctor to restore health, thereby reducing or eliminating symptoms.

With the exception of acute injuries, symptoms arise due to an imbalance in the system. The symptom is the 'check engine' light that tells us to look deeper and find what is out of balance. The primary pathways of elimination include the liver, kidney, stomach, intestines, and lungs. The secondary pathways include the skin and mucous membranes. If the primary pathways of elimination are blocked, then the body will try to eliminate via the secondary pathways.

An example of this can be seen with the accumulation of the body’s own hormones that are ineffectively processed by the liver and that can manifest itself as acne. In this way, we see, for example, that almost all skin conditions are a result of the blockage of one the primary routes of elimination. Biotherapeutic drainage can restore the imbalance in the liver both in the cells and outside the cells. The end result would include not only clearing the acne, but addressing the root cause of the problem. Thus, homeopathy allows the system to self-regulate and re-establish homeostasis.
