We need to retire the phrase "Use your words." 🚫

For many autistic people, speaking mouth-words is exhausting or impossible during high stress.

Gestures, sign language, picture exchange, and AAC devices are ALL valid words. When we honor all communication, we reduce frustration and tantrums.

"Aided Language Stimulation" (A fancy word for a simple thing).
We don't force children to press buttons on their talker. We just use it ourselves!

If we are playing bubbles, we press "Bubbles!" on the device while we blow them. We model the language without demanding a response. This takes the pressure off and makes communication fun.

BCBAs: Are you comfy with tech? 📱

We integrate high-tech AAC into our play-based sessions. We are looking for supervisors who don't gatekeep devices and who understand that AAC supports verbal speech, it doesn't hinder it.

"Why did they hit?"

Often, what looks like aggression is actually a desperate attempt to regulate a sensory system that is on fire.

If a child is overwhelmed by noise, they might scream to drown it out. At Bloom and Thrive, we don't punish the scream. We change the environment (dim lights, offer headphones).

We treat the cause, not the symptom.

Job Alert: We are looking for Sensory Detectives! 🕵️‍♀️

Great ABA isn't just about data; it's about reading the room. Our RBTs learn to recognize when a learner needs a "movement break" (seeker) or a "quiet tent" (avoider).

If you have an eye for detail and a heart for kids, we will train you to be an RBT. Join our team in Kilmarnock, VA!

Is your child a "Seeker" or an "Avoider"? (Or both?!)

Hypo-sensitive (Seeker): Needs MORE input. They might crash into walls, jump constantly, or make loud noises.

Hyper-sensitive (Avoider): Needs LESS input. They might cover their ears, dislike tags in clothes, or hide in small spaces.

Knowing your child's profile is the key to preventing meltdowns! Which one sounds like your kiddo? 👇

What does "Acceptance" look like in therapy?

It means we don't write goals to stop hand-flapping.
It means we don't force eye contact.
It means we respect "No."
It means we focus on things that actually improve quality of life: Communication, Safety, and Joy. Everything else is just personality. ✨

Why do we say "Acceptance" instead of "Awareness"?

"Awareness" means knowing autism exists. "Acceptance" means including autistic people in our community exactly as they are.

Historically, April was about "fighting" autism. At Bloom and Thrive, we don't fight neurodiversity—we celebrate it. We aren't looking for a cure; we are looking for connection.

This month, we are going (or Gold) to support the autistic community! ❤️♾️

To our neighbors in Kilmarnock and around the NNK:

Acceptance starts with community. It means being patient when a child is having a hard time at the grocery store. It means inviting the "quiet kid" to the birthday party.

Let's make the Northern Neck the most inclusive rural community in Virginia. Who’s with us? 🤝
