Many families don’t realize that veterans may be entitled to a free government-issued grave marker or headstone through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

To apply, paperwork is required, including:
• DD-214 discharge papers
• Death certificate
• VA application forms

There are several memorial options available through the VA, including bronze plaques, flat granite markers, upright granite markers, and bronze medallions.

Families often work directly with their local VA office or print the online paperwork, fill it out and fax or mail the application.
Some funeral homes will assist families with the application process.

We believe families deserve clear guidance during difficult times, and understanding available veteran benefits can help ease both stress and expense while ensuring service and sacrifice are properly honored.

This month we are honored to highlight Folded Flag Foundation.

The Folded Flag Foundation provides educational scholarships and support grants to the spouses and children of U.S. military and government personnel who lost their lives in service to our country. Their mission ensures that the families of these heroes have the opportunity to pursue education and build stable futures after profound loss.

Since its founding, the organization has helped thousands of Gold Star families by assisting with educational expenses from kindergarten through college and trade school.
