Neck muscle pain is commonly caused by strain from poor posture, stress, or injury, resulting in dull aches, stiffness, or sharp spasms. Types include acute strain, chronic tension knots (myofascial pain), and protective spasms, which often cause limited motion. Treatment typically involves heat, gentle stretching, and improving posture.

Common Types of Neck Muscle Pain
• Muscle Strain/Strain: The most common type, resulting from overextension or overworking muscles (e.g., "tech neck" or reading in bed), causing dull, achy pain and tenderness.
• Muscle Spasms: Sudden, intense, and painful tightening of neck muscles, making it nearly impossible to turn the head. Often occurs after sleeping in an awkward position or with injuries.
• Myofascial Pain (Trigger Points): Chronic, dull pain with tender "knots" (trigger points) in the muscle fibers, often caused by long-term stress or postural strain.
• Whiplash: A muscle sprain/strain injury that occurs when the neck jerks forward and back, typically during a car accident.
• Tension Headache: Muscle pain in the neck and upper shoulders that causes radiating, dull, or aching pain in the back of the head.
