As a clinician, I am often met with eye roles and skepticism when I suggest that my clients use positive self-talk and set specific times to challenge their core beliefs to feel less anxious or less depressed. But eyes stop rolling and skepticism dissipates when I remind my clients that the negative words which they tell themselves throughout the day often makes them feel like crap. Taking time to inertially talk to yourself differently helps to break a negative self-talk habit. So, take time each day to point out one positive characteristic of yourself and to look at the world a little differently.

We are often overwhelmed by the road in front of us. It can seem long, have too many choices, and the unknown can make us feel afraid and out of control. That is why it is important, when you are starting a journey or feel a little lost, to take a moment and remember that the struggles you are facing have a purpose that will lead you to your goals. A simple mindfulness exercise, called the Examine of Consciousness, done 3 times a day for 5 minutes can help you overcome the bumpy road. The exercise goes like this:

1) Identify one thing since your last examine to give thanks for.
2) Identify on area in your life you want to work to improve during the time in between this and the next examine.
3) Ask for the strength to use the time in between the examine to better the world around you.

This exercise will help to keep you focused on your daily goals while also staying present in the current moments of life. So, take a few moments to enjoy this bumpy road as you get to your own happy ending.

A hurt heart is seldom soothed by phrases starting with "At least.....". Any phrase that starts this way often minimizes the feelings felt by the other. It leaves them saying to themselves "I'm really hurt and now I feel like crap because there are worse things in the world, and I'm here feeling sorry for myself".
The phrase "at least" is often said by a "fixer" who isn't able to spend the time to help someone through their hurt and is often uncomfortable with the idea of being uncomfortable. Instead of fixing a person's hurt (that most likely can't be fixed by you and definitely can't be fixed by the phrase "at least"), be with them in their hurt. Let them know that their hurts are big and are valid but that they don't need to alone in their hurt. So, WHAT THE HELL, take a seat and be in the hurt with someone. Let them know they are not alone. I promise this is the best way to help them through it."

Meaningful Mondays:

The start of the week can either look like a daunting task or an adventure with great opportunity. Make the decision at the start of each week to live that week with purpose by taking these 5 easy steps:

1. Pause your mind for 5 minutes. Give yourself time and plan to be successful.
2. Take time to breath. 5 seconds in through your nose and 7 seconds out through your mouth. Repeat this 5 times.
3. Give thanks for the opportunities you have been given this week.
4. Make an achievable goal for yourself to complete this week and WRITE IT DOWN.
5. Visualize yourself completing this goal and ask for the strength, courage and humility to complete the goal.

This small exercise can have large positive effective in your life. So, give it a try! Everyone deserves to take five minutes.
