On this day sixty years ago, July 30, 1965, President Lyndon Baines Johnson traveled to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library in Independence, Missouri, to sign Medicare and Medicaid into law. His gesture drew attention to the 20 years it had taken Congress to enact government health insurance for senior citizens and low income Americans after President Truman had proposed the two vital programs.

The Board of Directors met today for their annual strategic planning meeting. Many topics were covered including enhancing membership benefits, expanding the brand of the association, offering additional regulatory technical assistance and education on emerging topics impacting compliance and financial resources, and of course, developing federal and state legislative strategies for the coming year.

Raimondo’s promotion of Care.com came under fire at the time. One of the critics in 2020 was Nicholas Oliver, Executive Director for the Rhode Island Partnership for Home Care, over safety concerns.

"The Rhode Island Partnership for Home Care, representing home care providers licensed by the Rhode Island Department of Health, has concerns over the announcement made earlier today by Governor Gina Raimondo regarding her relationship with ‘Care.com’ to provide access to child and elder care 'volunteers' and 'recently unemployed individuals' looking for side work," said Oliver at the time.

During COVID, former Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo closed Rhode Island’s daycare centers and repeatedly promoted a privately owned out-of-state company that had powerful investors and a track record of alleged violations.

Over 40 home care administrators participated either in-person and online this morning in our Quarterly Membership Meeting. Our guest presenters were the leadership of the Rhode Island Department of Health’s Center for Health Facilities Regulation. We were thankful for their engaging presentation on deficiency prevention and regulatory compliance. Together, we are partners in advancing quality healthcare at home.
