The Achilles tendon, named after a hero in Greek mythology, does a pretty heroic job of helping you move every day. Its strength and flexibility are important for jumping, running, and walking.

Nonetheless, the Achilles tendon can rupture when it gets stretched beyond its capacity. Any activity or sport that involves movements (e.g., sudden pivots, starts, and stops) that put stress on the Achilles tendon can lead to a rupture.

If you have sharp or severe pain in the back of the ankle near your heel, a feeling like you got kicked in the calf, and difficulty bending your foot forward, book a visit with one of our experts here at the Foot & Ankle Institute of New England. Waiting to seek treatment for an Achilles tendon rupture can put you at risk for balance problems, altered gait, mobility issues, and permanent disability.

Falls Prevention Awareness Week starts today, so let’s talk about foot problems as a risk factor for falls.

Several studies have found that foot problems are associated with increased odds of falling among older adults. Bunions, for instance, push the big toe out of alignment, prompting you to shift your weight to the side of your foot and ultimately making slips and trips more likely. In addition, hammertoes increase your risk of tripping or stumbling by causing your toes to bend abnormally, making it harder for them to grip the ground for stability.

If you have a foot condition or deformity that may be putting you at risk for falls, get it seen by one of our experts here at the Foot & Ankle Institute of New England. Contact our office near you now for an appointment:

Persistent pain in the ball of your foot? Swelling at the base of the second toe? Pain that worsens when you wear shoes? Don’t chalk them up to “just a part of aging” or “normal soreness.” They can be early signs of crossover toe.

Don’t wait – see one of our foot and ankle experts for proper evaluation. Treatment outcomes are significantly improved if medical evaluation is sought right at the onset of symptoms.

⏰ Happy What’s-the-Fact Wednesday! | Today, we’re squashing a risky myth about running shoes:

❌You can wear running shoes for as long as they look and feel good.
✅ Running shoes should be replaced every 300 – 500 miles, even if they still look pristine. That's because it's around this point that their midsole cushioning loses resiliency and the ability to effectively absorb shock. That means more strain on your muscles and joints and a greater risk for injury.

Wearing worn-out running shoes led to a foot injury? Schedule an appointment with one of our foot specialists today.

A malunion fracture occurs when a broken bone heals in the wrong position, resulting in deformity, misalignment, and difficulty with movement. In the case of a foot or ankle fracture, a malunion can happen if the fracture isn’t properly stabilized, if weight is placed on the foot too soon, or if there are other factors that disrupt the healing process.

Here at the Foot & Ankle Institute of New England, our providers specialize in foot and ankle fracture care. You can trust them to take all necessary measures to ensure your fracture heals properly.

Call the office nearest you today to schedule an appointment and take the first step toward a healthy recovery.

Tingling toes? Cold feet? Although atypical, these could be early warning signs of poor circulation caused by high cholesterol. Because your feet are the farthest point from your heart, they’re often the first to feel the effects. Reduced blood flow to your feet means you can have a cut or injury and not know that you have one. This can lead to ulcers and infections.

To prevent that from happening, monitor your cholesterol numbers closely and check your feet daily. At the first sign of a problem, reach out to us for an appointment with one of our foot experts.

And we’re back with our Ask-the-Doc series to answer your questions about your foot and ankle health. Today, our experts are addressing a common concern about platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

Q: I’m considering PRP therapy for my foot arthritis. Is it safe?
A: When performed by a qualified healthcare provider, PRP therapy is generally considered safe. Because it uses your own blood, the risk of an allergic reaction is extremely low. Like any injection, there’s slight pain, swelling, and/or bruising at the injection site, but serious complications are rare.

PRP is a promising, nonsurgical treatment option for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, and it has been shown to reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing for certain cases of foot arthritis.

Schedule an appointment with us today and explore how PRP injections can help you manage your foot arthritis effectively! Contact our office near you:
