🙄🙅🏽♀️🫠 (ignore my grammatical errors) … when you’re breastfeeding/lactating and away from your baby you need a method to express your milk and a container to hold and store it. Even if you’re planning on “coming right back.” Options include but are not limited to…
1. Hands and a chiller
2. A manual breast pump and a collection cup
3. An electric breast pump and a breast milk bag
4. Someone to bring you your baby
This mother was exclusive breastfeeding her baby that was born a few weeks ago. She is now severely engorged, at risk for mastitis, at risk for a reduced milk supply and has other severe, non breastfeeding associated, medical complications.
ICU/ED Providers please ask all your patients if they are breastfeeding and if so call the IBCLC on staff and request a consultation. This can support maintaining their supply, offering a consultation and supplies needed, and reviewing medication safety when providing the milk to infants.
Birth Workers: If you hear of your clients returning to the hospital or an urgent care facility help them make a plan for their milk.
